Hope someone can help. I'm driving a 2003 Boxster 2.7 , last week without any warning the battery died in the middle of a shopping center parking lot, I was parked right next to a Auto supply store . So I had to buy an emergency battery just to get back home and there had to order a porsche battery from the dealership (was surprised they have none in stock, but oh well), supposedly it'll be there in 2 weeks. So now the car starts right up, everything works fine but the radio itself(a Cdr-23) stays dead. Did I blow a fuse? Did the guy that put the battery in forget to hook up a cable somewhere he should have? Sorry for asking such a stupid Question, but maybe someone can give me the right idea where to start looking? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

You probably need a your radio code input.

Don't bother with a "Porsche" labeled battery. Porsche doesn't make batteries, only very expensive labels for someone else's. I've never bought a factory battery in my life. Box store or (Sears used to be good) have always performed exactly as advertised (I.E. 5 yr battery last just about 5 years), if they don't, you return them and get credit towards a new battery for the unused time.

It also seems remarkably weird that your battery would go completely dead sitting in a parking lot for a few. Are you sure you did not have a loose or corroded terminal? Did you have a load test done on it at the parts store.

I guess the main point is forget the Porsche battery, it is in no way worth it. And you will probably need a radio code to reactivate it. (don't no for sure but many groan about it. You can beg for it here (I don't know for sure, I don't have a stock radio).

Thanks for your quick reply PK :)

and you are probably right about the "porsche" battery, but the one and only they had in the store doesn't seem to fit right and I only have one metal bracket to the left to hold the battery, guess i'm just being a chicken there. And yes, the battery died on me within lesser than 3 hours, started up alright in the morning and then after 3 short stops (car turned off and back on within the hour)...it was dead. But what do you mean with radio code? Even if I have a code...it won't turn ON, no messages come up at all no matter how long I push the "on" button. Am I forced now to drive to the dealership?

So are you stating your battery went did while you were driving?

Did the auto store state your old battery was indeed in that bad a shape?

Is the new battery holding a charge? If not you have a alternator issue most likely.

Angie,

this is what i would do:

- check the radio fuse in the driver's footwell. there should be a little booklet on the inside of the fuse cover which tells you which fuse is which. if the booklet is not there, the info is in your owners manual. in my car the radio fuse is B2 (row B, fuse 2) but it might be different in your car. take the fuse out and see if the wire connection inside the fuse is broken. if it is, replace the fuse with a fuse of the same rating. there may be a few spares at the bottom of the fuse panel.

- if that doesn't work, the fuse on the back of the radio may have blown. you will need to remove the radio to check it. you will need to buy some radio keys to remove the radio. you can buy them from www.beckerautosound.com. keep in mind that these keys cost about $2. there are many sellers on eBay that try to charge $10-20 for them. don't buy them if they cost that much. if the fuse is blown replace it and see what happens.

- find an independent Porsche shop in your area. try to stay away from the dealership if you like to keep your $$.

- have them test your old battery and your alternator

- go here http://mike.focke.googlepages.com/batteries and choose a battery and buy it (or tell the independent which one to buy for you)

good luck.

Thanks for your advice Chris, that was really nice

I've already checked the fuse next to the driver door, everything there is fine. So next step is to order some of the removal keys you were talking about and see whats going on behind the radio

Guess I have to be patient

Oh and...I try to stay away from the dealership as much as possible(the closest ones are 1,5 and 2 hours away), I'm aware of the sky high costs, but there's not one place here in little Boonyville that will work on the car, as soon as they hear porsche they take 3 steps back and act as if I'm driving some alien space ship :P

So thanks all of you for your advice

if you are limber and your stereo is in one of the two bottom slots in the center console, you may be able to access the fuse without removing the radio. pull off the removable side carpet piece (it just un-snaps, you won't break it), grab a flashlight and see if you can see/remove the fuse from the back of the radio.

if you can't reach the fuse from behind, a local car stereo shop may have a set of Porsche removal keys if you don't want to wait. you really only need them for about 30 seconds to check the fuse.

i have the radio removal keys if you want to borrow them. just send me a PM with your name/address and i'll mail them out to you and you can just mail them back when you're done. ;)

Angie,

I just went through this same thing. I had to replace the battery in the car and a fuse on the back of the radio of my 2002 Boxster S. After doing that, I put the radio code in and this baby rocks! :D
