I need rear tires for my 2006 987S. Size is 265/35/19. In Michelin PS'2. Tire Rack is out of inventory. Is this a common problem?

I would speak to Porsche customer service, and whilst your on the phone ask them about 19" Conti2.

In the UK there is a much worse state with Porsche footing the bill to have customers swap brands on a buy 1 get the other 3 for nothing or providing loaners whilst customers await stock.

There is a big shortage in N rated tires in certain sizes.

There are delivery problems with Michelin for the moment, the standard 17" on the rear for 987 is not available since months.

All I will say is Porsche bought the remaining inventory so they may still have some in stock to cover customers who fall fowl of a nail or two.

FYI the latest Porsche tire guide now lists for the 17" wheel the Conti3.

Personally I do not like the Conti2, and what is worse they came on my 2008 LE S. I have had one tire pick up a nail since I bought the car, the tire fitter put a Conti2 XL on the car until I noticed when I picked up the car. It took him a week to find the N rated version. He said the XL was a better tire. He was probably right but I pointed out the Porsche requirement and he sort of understood.

I am hoping Porsche drop the 19" in the Conti2, when they do I will be onto customer service pointing out that it wouldn't be right for a customer to have to replace all 4 tires when all he really needed was 1 or at worst 2. We shall see.

That's very interesting .... I have an '05 S with 19" Michelins ... the rack told me it was a proprietary tire & size and only could be bought through Porsche Dealers ( reeks of Restraint of Trade ) but they could sell me the fronts ? Said " no thanks " and called the Porsche dealer & got a quote ... then called a local tire dealer & his deal was better and he is local so I wanted to support him ... he said it would take a few days to get them but he " knew " he could get them ... that was a week ago Friday ... we'll see what we see on Monday ... I'll keep you posted.

Jwolfe, just make sure they are N1's. Tire Rack has plenty of non-Porsche approved Michelin PS2's.

Porsche's N approval tire thingy is a bunch of BS IMHO. I understand that its a high-performance car and that tires need to meet the speed and handling requirements. But a tire is just a tire and, to paraphrase Scotty, you canna change the laws of physics, While I know that different tires, even of the same make and model, perform differently and that Porsche has specced and tested tires, that does not mean that other tires won't perform fine.

I know that people might worry about warranty issues but keep in mind that it is US law that warrantees can't be voided for aftermarket parts. Service can be denied only if it can be proven that the aftermarket parts caused the problem. So unless you feel that an aftermarket tire will cause your suspension to fail there is no reason not to go with a non-N tire.

I say, don't be a sheep, buy the tires that fit your car, budget and driving style and ignore Porsche's N thing.

Is there any specific information posted anywhere on what exactly the difference is between an "N" and a non "N" tire. I'm on my second set of PS2's (non- "N"), bought this last set in January from the local Discount Tire. I love em.

Then, a little while later they called back and said you are right. Michelin is not planning to make that tire again for 6-8 weeks. The parts manager at one of the local dealerships also confirmed.

I can wait a couple months, still got a litlte tread left. But I'll be needing something by June/July.

Nick, excellent question! Apparently (per the Porsche dealership Parts Manager) Michelin has a reserve of tires to pull from for these emergency situations. Not for a schmoo like me who just needs new rear rubber in about 2-3K miles.

There's your answer, when you really need some find a nail in the road, shouldn't be difficult my car seems to find them without trying ;)

Well, here's the update: went to my local tire dealer today, after he called saying my tires were in ( I specified N-1 several times when placing the order ) I asked to see the tires & guess what ? ... right, not N-1's.

He ( a Michelin dealer ) got on the phone with Michelin whilst I went outside & called PCNA ( they are very helpfull ) on returning I learned that they had located the rears ( no problem getting the fronts ) at a Porsche dealer in another state... they would hold them for 30 minutes ! ( PCNA, by the way, basically said that N-1 was the only way to go ) so, the saga continues :lol:

Jwolfe, sorry to hear about your troubles. I think you did the right thing. I am going to wait for the N-1's. I love the tires we have, and am not willing to risk close to $700 to "try" a different tire. I know these work great.
