I have a 2001 996tt with a GIAC software and B&B exhaust system upgrades. The car is producing close to 500HP and 500 lb/ft torque. The car now has 50450 miles and needs a new clutch. My question is will an OEM clutch be sufficient for this application or a heavy duty clutch be better to prevent slippage?

I've heard that pretty much everything is rated to 600hp to give the reliability built in. So up to you? You could air on the side of caution as you need a new clutch anyway, but as i say, i think with only 500hp (more importantly the torque figure) you'd be well inside its capabilities....

The difference in price should be negligible, but the difference in bite should be quite noticeable if you go with the high performance heavy duty clutch. While in there, do the flywheel as well. I did this on my Boxster with the 996 3.4 and the difference is amazing.

Even though the stock clutch is rated for more power than you have, err on the side of longevity and go for the better clutch and flywheel. I think you'll find the increased performance to be worth it.

From what I've read, the OEM should be fine for your 500 HP....but it all sort of goes back to that saying "as long as you're in there"....As was noted above, the difference in price isn't that much, the labor will be the same....so what's the sense of not going for the beefier clutch. That way if for some reason you did want to go for more HP down the road, you're ready for it. I wouldn't hesitate a bit on this one.
