Hi folks

I just got my car back from it's 80 000Km service with a few jobs to do. Firstly I need the clutch replaced, the CV boots are cracking, requires new discs (rotors) and pads all round and also the front driver side damper sounds like an old mattress!!. Also when I picked it up from the dealer I broke the oddment tray cover!!

Typical that these jobs always come at once. Never mind, it's a passion at the end of the day and I am looking forward to doing some of the work myself.

I have, however, a few questions.

1. Is it worth going for aftermarket brake components? I have found a full kit that has Zimmermann discs(rotors), Textar pads and all the necessary antisqueel shims etc which are OEM for 570 Euros (I believe Textar are or were one of the OEM suppliers to Porsche) Anyone used these parts and notice if they are inferior etc? (I will be fitting them myself)

2. The garage couldn't be sure if the sqeeking was indeed the damper although they lubricated the antiroll bar to rule it out. It's still sqeeking but I reckon it could be the top mounting that is the culprit. Anyone have experience of this problem? Again I will probably do this job myself.

3. I will probably tackle the CV boots myself and wondered if anyone else has done them. My experience of servicing German cars has always been that they are straight forward and uncomplicated. Has anyone done this and are there any pitfalls to look out for?

Any info for this would be greatly welcomed and as usual great site and keep up the good work

Nic.

Nic,

I would stay clear of the aftermarket brakes. Just go for the OEM unless you track your car. I don't know if they have corrected this but the hub of the Zimmerman rotors used to rust. Looks nasty. Also the aftermarket pads will create more brake dust. I'm a freak about clean wheels so I personally hate brake dirt.

Just my opinion.

You can get everything you need for the brakes online for under $400. The job is easy.

Can't help with the CV joints but I'm sure if you do search you will find a thread that will help you. Lots of great people on this forum to help you out.

Success!

Ben:

Try Design Rotor Technology at this website: http://designrt.net/

They sell Zimmerman Rotors that they cross-drill and slot for around $300 per set (front and rear), and free shipping. They also carry Brembo and other major manufacturers.

Go to the Sunset Porsche Link under "Special Offers" (at the top of this page) and call them. Tell them to give you a price for all the components to do your brakes. Rotors , pads, caliper bolts, shims, Etc.

See what price they give you. OEM rotors are about $119 a piece for the fronts.

Repssundin:

If you are not getting a pulsating sensation through the brake pedal (which would indicate a warped rotor) and the car is braking fine, then your main concern would be if the thickness of the rotors has worn down to the minimum allowable thickness.

Not sure about the exact spec for a 996 rotor, but, for example, the minimum thickness for a 986 front rotor is 22.6mm (0.89 inches) and for a 986 rear rotor 18mm (0.71 inches).

I believe you may find the spec in your owner's manual, under the heading "specifications".

Keep working at this stuff and you'll be amazed at how (almost) everything falls into place after a while.

Regars, Maurice.

I got a recent quote from Sunset for my 2000 Cab4 rotors for $112 ea (front) and $100 ea (rear) plus $70 shipping.

I didnt ask about the pads, I was thinking of Hawks maybe. Anybody know what the stock pads cost?
