Can my vin # tell me if my engine was replaced?

Recommended Posts

99 996 C2

I'm the third owner of my car. I bought it when it had 50k on the clock. My mechanic was asking me if the engine was replaced early in it's life (besuase so many of the 99's did have engines replaced.)

I have to records from the first owner but they don't show any such replacement. But the records are incomplete at best.

Is the any way to trace an engine replacement through the vin#?

Thanks,

Phillipj

Thanks Loren!

If you have a good relationship with your local P-car dealer, they can look up the serial number for the original engine. You can then check it against the actual S/N stamped on the block. The serial number is stamped on the flat area next to the oil sump. It will start with M96.
