Airbag fault codes

Hi Guys,

Airbag light popped on (996 02Tip). Can't reset it with my durametric software. Faultcodes are: 23, 25 and 27, any idea?

Fault 25 Passenger's seat belt tensioner Fault memory/warning light

Fault 27 Ignition circuit, passenger Fault memory/warning light

Did you change the seat belts or remove the seats?

Any idea how to fix it? Replace buckles and mass connection ?Will both airbags not work under these conditions?

That is what is strange those are not buckle codes (there is a TSB for buckles and ground connections).

Buckle codes are 44 through 50.

I wonder if someone put old (prior to MY02) seat belts on the car without the pyrotech devices?

I live in the Netherlands. The car is from Belgium.

Don't know what the previous owner did with the seatbelts but it would sound strange to me if they were replaced by older ones.. :huh:

Any clue how to fix this? Need to check if the belts are replaced with old style ones?

What seatbelt partnumber normally goes into a 996C2Tip from 2002?

Depending on the color the correct seat belts for an RoW MY02 and newer car should start with 996.803.981.04 (left side) or 996.803.982.06 (right side).

In the US they were required in MY02 but I am not sure if Porsche put them in all countries cars.

Have you checked to see if they are plugged in?

Also, you might check the ground connections under the left front seat (remove the key from the ignition or the air bag light will come on).

Yes, left side on most cars is drivers side - but we do have folks from the UK, Australia and Japan here too.

Check the connections at the seat belts are plugged in at the B-pillar and check the connections under the seat including the large bundle of wires that are tied to the chassis ground.

You are looking for corrosion or signs that things got wet there.

Hi Loren,

It took things apart today. Seems that the correct seatbelts are in place (with wire). All is connected as it should be, at least so it would seem so to me. Only thing I can't figure out is where the heck the seatbelt pyrotechnic wire goes to..

I've attached some pictures from the seatbelt wire and the wires under the drivers seat. There's a lot diffents wires there, not sure what to check. Allso ground seems good, no corrosion, tested it with a multimeter to the chassis and got 0 Ohms..

I can delete the airbag faultcodes, but they return in no more then 2 seconds.

Could it be that the pyrotechnic belt tentioners have gone off (accident) and were not replaced? Any way to check that?

Any other ideas?

You need a PIWIS tester to pinpoint the problem, by the way using a multimeter on airbag systems is dangerous, the battery inside the meter can let explode the modules ( meter in Ohm possition ).

If you can find someone with a PST2 or PIWIS have them check the exact coding for the seat belts. They should be coded as "active".

If that is not it then either both seat belts are bad (not likely) or the airbag control unit may be bad.

The guy I bought this car from said the airbag light came on after he removed his seat covers, so I am assuming that the 27 has something to do with a loose/unconnected wire on the passengerside seat, but I have not found anything yet. Your photos might help me find the right wire to check.

Fault 27 says firing circuit for the passenger side is not working (disconnected?).

In another post you said your fault was 271? Is this the same car - same fault?

Loren -- Yes same car wrong fault code :huh:

Where would the firing Circuit for the Passenger side? Maybe I can check to see if its disconnected?

You want to very carefully check the wires at the passenger airbag (up under the dash) and the airbag controller (behind the center console - mounted on the tunnel).

Do not put the key in the ignition - the key does not have to be turned on to activate the airbag circuit - only in the ignition. Keep the key in your pocket.

Is this plug supposed to be plugged into something? This is under the passenger side front seat coming from the bundle of wires coming from the grounding bolt under the seat. I attached 2 pictures, which are not great, but hopefully will give you a better idea of what I am talking about.

2000 996 Cab There are 2 wires one is a light chocolate brown and the other is a lighter brown with an orange ish thin stripe. The end is a male 1 amp plug I was unable to make out the numbers on the plug. I saw 1 AMP 86####### Under it was BMW ######

Airbag disable bar for child seat option.

I have the Airbag disable bar for child seat option and decided last weekend to remove the bar, in which I simply removed the seatbolts and unplugged the wires and now my AIRBAG FAILURE light is on.

I installed the bar a couple years ago, but never used the child seat in the front. As a result, I never had the dealer activate the option within the sofware as I was told I needed to do in order for the option to funtion properly. Given this, I am not sure why the fault is now on after removing it? Does the now loose plug need to be plugged into something eles or removed? Wil the fault clear it self over time (I have not driven the car since it came on), or do I just need to take my car to the dealer and have the fault cleared?

Did you unplug anything else?

Best to check it with Durametric or PST2 tester and see what the fault is.

Could be a seat belt buckle... those are pretty common.
