Dealer over-filled engine oil?

Today I had my oil changed at Niello Porsche in Rocklin, CA. When the job was complete they stated that they over-filled the oil but seemed to not be very concerned about it stating it was just barely over the full mark. However when I got home I noticed the car was spitting smoke and black watery mist out the tailpipe. Should I be concerned, should I try to drain it? Can it damage the motor? Thanks to all those who know enough to post answers and not just questions like me:> Thanks again!

It never ceases to amaze me how a dealership can make a mistake like that - they are supposed to have "Porsche trained" techs.

You need to come to one of our Work on Cars Days - we will teach you how to change your own oil - it is very easy (and about a quarter of the cost you just paid).

An easy way to remove a small amount of oil is to remove the oil filter and pour out the oil in the filter. Then put the filter back on.

I tried to do my own oil change & did the same thing. Then I tried to drain the oil, but I think I drained the transmission fluid instead. Would someone please tell me where I can find the drain plug & how I refill the transmission fluid? THANKS!

Hi Loren. Just wanted to clarify that I drained some kind of fluid from the center of the car. It was greyish/yellow in color. It looked like oil, but when I started the engine the oil level was still high. So, I'm assuming I drained the wrong fluid. I drained this fluid towards the rear, center of the car. It was an allen wrench screw. When I started the car, the engine started, but when I put it in gear, the car didn't move. Did I drain transmission fluid?

I thought I drained the transmission fluid, but when I called the dealership they said that the transmission fluid color will turn from pink to looking more like oil. So, I'm not sure if I drained the oil or transmission fluid?? If so, I need to replenish this too.

6 speed or Tiptronic?

6 speed oil smells like transmission oil (strong).

Tiptronic fluid is red and lighter weight than motor oil or manual gearbox oil.

Look at the DIY diagrams for oil change and manual transmission oil change (assuming your car is a 6 speed) and see which looks like the drain you removed.

This is the oil drain plug - an 8 mm hex (as I recall). The clean area.

Thanks so much Loren, I found the drain plug!

I'm draining the oil now, but now I need to replenish the fluid I accidentally drained earlier. I drained it from the rear center, the pan in between the wheels. Was this the transmission fluid? How do I now replace it? Thanks again!

Tiptronic. I purchased a suction gun to replenish the transmission fluid as someone advised me that I need the tool for this project. Now I need to find where the transmission fluid is located & how I use this tool?

Also, the local auto parts stores do not carry Porsche transmission fluid, so I have to wait to go to the dealer tomorrow. I'm thinking of re-using the transmission fluid that I had drained. Would this be ok? Thanks!

Thank you for directing me to the DIY forum for the tranmission fluid change.

I'm not sure if I have done serious damage to my engine. When I initially over-filled the oil, the engine blew excessive smoke. I drove the car home, which is about 2 miles away.

With your help I was able to drain the oil & replenish it to normal level. The car still blows excessive smoke, but only when I press on the accelerator...& there seems to be more smoke coming from the right exhaust.

Will the smoke eventually blow off, or have I done serious damage to the engine? Is it possible that I may have fouled the spark plugs? Please advise. Thanks Loren!
