The top trnsmission of My 99 boxster is borken. Now I'm looking for the used transmission. Do anybody know the part no. of the old transmsision and the updated transmission?

If i change to the updated transmission, do i need to change other parts? How much does it cost ( transmission + other parts)? Is this the common problem for 99 boxster? Please give me some comment which type of transmission i should change?

911crazy:

There are two convertible top transmissions on the Boxster, one left and one right.

Which one is broken?

What do you mean by broken? Is it the transmission itself or one of the drive cables?

986 561 179 02 and 986 561 180 02 are the part numbers for the "A-version" (old style) transmissions.

987 561 179 01 and 987 561 180 03 are the part numbers for the "B-version" (new style) transmissions.

These two latter part numbers superseded earlier part numbers for the B-version transmissions.

The B-version transmissions list for about $550 each at the dealer, but are sometimes available used on e-bay for about $500 a pair.

The A-version transmissions are a common failure point on the MY97 to MY99 Boxsters, especially when the top is not serviced (with some parts that wear out) or lubricated on a reasonably regular basis. What is even more common is for the outer sheath of the drive cables to stretch so that the inner speedometer type metal cable is no longer engaged and driven by the electric motor, and that will cause the top to malfunction.

If you replace the A-version with B-version transmissions, you do not have to replace any other parts, but most people also replace the old style (prone to stretching) cables with the new style (ribbed and reinforced) cables.

Regards, Maurice.
