Does anyone have any experience with installing a convertible top on a 996.

I have a 2000 C2 996 and plan to install a new convertible top.

The service manual lists a a bunch of parts that need to be replaced but I

was not able to find the corresponding part numbers (see attachment).

Any suggestions on whether I should attempt this by myself or have it installed.

Also are there any special tools needed.

Any suggestions on installers in Chicagoland area.

I don't have any experience with the 996 top, but several years ago I replaced the multi-layered top on my '62 Bug .

It's a lot more involved than it might look. In my experience, the material needs to be pulled extremely tight and then secured while keeping everything perfectly lined up.

I was fortunate enough to do mine with a buddy that had some experience, but there's really some technique involved that is hard to learn while you're doing it the first time.

If you're in Chicago you should have some experienced installers in town.

Good luck,

Dave

Did you replace the top yourself? What did you buy?

Al,

I replaced original convertible top myself with an OEM top. I did not replace the hardware and seals as listed in the manual, but live in a very dry climate and don't normally drive it when raining. The top went on fairly easy - the hardest part was re-installing the headliner as I did not have the original zipper pull (Peter Serbanica was a great help there). I will email you a short writeup I did for another member on areas I had problems with during the install.
