Hi All,

I've recently bought a 2003 Porsche Boxster and would appreciate some advice on whether snow/rain could damage the soft top. I live in Warsaw, Poland and the temp. goes really low in Winter; any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Raj

Raj:

The major problem with weather that includes temperatures below 40 degrees Farenheit involves possible cracking of the vinyl window.

Since you have a 2003, you should have a glass window and therefore don't have to worry about that problem.

As far a rain/snow damage, it's a good idea to treat the top with RaggTopp cleaner and the RaggTopp protectant (fabric version, not vinyl).

The more important concern from rain is to insure that your drains are clear of leaves or debris. If the drains are clogged, you run the risk of getting water into the cabin, where it will find its way under the driver's (left side) seat and fry your central alarm/locking computer. That can turn into a very expensive $$$$ repair.

Regards, Maurice.

Maurice/White,

Thanks very much indeed for that piece of advice.

I'll try to source the "raggtop" from somewhere; I do apologise for my ignorance but where are the drains that you are referring to? Is it internal or external?

Also, would it suffice if I covered the car with a waterproof car cover or something?

Cheers mate,

Raj

Raj:

Here is a link to one of Mike Focke's Boxster Pages which deals specifically with all of the drains in the Boxster, and how to clear them out:

If you need more photos let me know, and I'll dig some up.

A cover over the car definitely helps to reduce the amount of water that finds its way to the drains of the car, but it's only a partial solution. The drains should be cleared out regardless. Keep that central alarm/locking computer under the driver's seat in mind.

In case you are going to be searching on the internet, the product is spelled "RaggTopp".

Regards, Maurice.

Raj, if you decide to use a car cover, make sure the car is very-very clean. If not. the cover will get dirty on the under-side and scratch your car's finish.

Just a note on the top cleaner / water-proofer. If you can't find Ragg Topp in Poland, I have had great results with the Renovo cleaner / water-proofer. They are located in the UK so it might be easier to find.

Maurice/Rick/White,

Many thanks for all the responses.

I got the car yesterday but didn't manage to drive it as yet!

I'm in Moscow at the moment on business; perfect timing!

It may well be a blessing in disguise because I can focus on the various issues you guys have advised me on.

Thanks a again.
