Hey all..

I did the serpentine belt replacement and it would seem that my old tensioner can't hold the new belt (2000S, 60k miles). I'm wondering if anyone has done a DIY replacement of the tensioner spring. I've looked at the diagram and it would seem that the spring is located behind a bracket. That bracket seems to be bolted to the block with two bolts. Has anyone removed this bracket? How hard was it? What are the clearance issues? I've not started into this yet, but it would seem that the plastic guard piece that sits on top of this bracket would need to come off. I hope not, cause the bolts on that piece are very difficult to access (u joints, extensions and 1/4 inch sockets/ ujoint sockets and even then you are lucky to get on them). Any directions are most definitely appreciated!!

Thanks!

What do you mean by “hold the belt? Is it flying off?

I assume you’ve checked to see if your new belt is the same size as your old. Could be you’ve wound up with a miss sized pulley somewhere for some reason. You can go to a good old fashioned Auto Parts store and get a Dayco or Gates belt the next size down

I looked into that when I thought I had tensioner problem. It looked to me you had to practically take every d_m accessory of the front of the engine. Make sure your belt is firmly seated on the bottom most (crank?) pulley. From what I gleaned, I’d exhaust ever other possibility before I attacked the tensioner.

Good luck, PK

The belt is slipping on occasion and I checked all of the pulleys (idler and accessories) and they are still running true - there isn't any slack of wobble or play in any of them. I purchased the belt from the dealer, but that doesn't meen it's the right one. I'm actually running the old belt right now in hopes that it takes some of the load off the tensioner while I wait for the new tensioner to arrive.

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever attempted this as a DIY. From what I read, a tensioner failure after a belt change is not unheard of and has happened before.

Thanks!
