17-inch Boxster II wheels not on Boxster S?

Recommended Posts

I am new to this forum and struggling to purchase my first Porsche. The Boxster S was finally delivered after 6 months (officially it is a 2008). Once I realized it was coming in winter I ordered 17-inch Boxster II wheels with winter tires (I like the look), but at the last moment the dealer informed me that they don't fit the S model. I checked wheel/tire sizes on web sites which don't provide a clue as to the problem, but one web site did indicate lack of compatibility. The other set I have is 19-inch Turbo wheels with summer tires, also factory standard. Any ideas if/why the 17-inch wheels are incompatible, and suggestions as to what I should do would be appreciated. There is 50 degree weather in Chicago early next week - the rebellious part of me says probably I could get the car home on the summer tires. But then I'd be stuck.

Thanks, Dan

The Boxster II wheels are approved for use on both the 987 Boxster and Boxster S. Your dealer needs to read TSB 11/07 4440 Approval: Winter Tires,Wheels and Snow Chains -- dated August 17, 2007.

That TSB clearly states that is one of several winter wheels that are approved by Porsche for your car.

Just FYI - All TSBs are available here to Contributing Members. To find out how to become one click here.

That is great news (and fast!). I am most appreciative. I look forward to exploring this site.

I made a small contribution (to start) but I guess until it registers here I can't view the TSB, so please bear with me.

The service guy looking at the same TSB indicates the 17-inch wheels are not approved for Boxster S. On that assumption... He notes (e.g.) that the console settings for tire pressure only have 18-inch and 19-inch settings, expresses concerns about possible effects on speedometer reading and PSM behavior. I don't care about the speedo; I won't put enough miles on it in the winter that it will matter. Since I can use an external pressure gauge, presumably I can learn to compensate for any discrepancies. I'm more concerned about possible premature, delayed or inappropriate response of PSM (and PASM).

But the thinner and larger aspect ratio 17-inch tires are better for winter. (And, I like the look.) Comments?

OK, I can see the TSB now. It is confusing, the 17-inch Boxster II wheels are not flagged but the corresponding tires are.
