EVO CAI vs. Fabspeed

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 996 CAB and I'm going to buy Fabspeed mufflers for it and do the GIAC software update. I've read several posts regarding CAI's and plan to get one as well. The question I have is: Fabspeed has a cold air intake for around $225 - Evo seems to be a VERY popular intake but is a good bit more $$$. CAn anyone compare the two and will I get significant gains by spending extra $$$? I have no problem spending the money if it's worth it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Another question while I'm at it - I plan to get a B&M SSK and install it myself. I looked at the instructions and it seemed VERY involved. Is it fairly straight-forward or should I just have a shop do it?

Take care,

Todd

Fabspeed cold air is not considered very good at anything except blowing your MAF. EVO is much higher quality, appears not to blow MAF. Neither will give you much horsepower but do sound great. I have the EVO. Muffler again will improve the sound and that is about it. GIAC along with the EVO and muffler will probably give you around 10 extra horsepower. Not much extra cheap horsepower to be found in the 996 and unless you put a blower on your car you are probably wasting your money but do not let that stop you I have done all this except went with another muffler. The short shift kit is great.

Roundtree,

I beg to differ on the Fabspeed CAI. I have had one for over 3 years with a K&N filter and never had a MAF problem EVER. It seems highly unlikely that a silicon hose can foul a MAF. Sure there is no HP gain but the sound is great.

Just my experience,

Cheers, Phillipj

The Fabspeed intake is nice if you want to retain your stock airbox and look of the engine compartment...The intake sound is much more aggressive than stock, but a piece of red silicone hose won't do anything for the horsepower numbers. I also checked out the Fabspeed mufflers and found them to be well constructed and well recommended depending on who you talked to. I ended up going with the AWE mufflers. They're not obnoxious around town or on the highway - no drone to them - but when you get on it, they sound really throaty. The only criticism of the Fabspeed mufflers that I was warned of by my local Porsche tech (who had installed several Fabspeed & AWE systems) was that they were loud and if I wasn't going to track the car regularly, that I should think about how loud it was going to be in eveyday use. I'm extremely happy with my choice of of the AWE product - their customer service was outstanding and the installation was straight forward - no surprises...I'd be wary of using the K & N filter with the MAF...

Good luck with your choices!
