02 clutch & flywheel REPLACEMENT TIME >=(

what up

recently purchased 02 996 cabrio with 39k on her in august of 07. here we are in december of 07 and now the clutch needs to be replaced with only 44k on her and i don't drive her that hard xD anyway looking to replace clutch and flywheel (dual mass) to some kind of SPORT clutch or STAGE 1 clutch kit with lightweight flywheel and have been reading quite a bit on this subject. i think i won't mind the clutch chatter but engine stalling at a stop is not something i want to deal with nor the check engine light on 24/7. i have a few questions:

1) where is a darn 02-04 996 shop manual? can't find this thing anywhere but got one for the 99-01 996 if anyone is interested, pm me

2) suggestion on clutch kit (looking at SACHS, read good things about them but open to other brands)

3) suggestion on flywheel (looking at Fidanza)

4) what about doing RMS job at the same time as clutch/flywheel job?

I just bought an 02' C2 with 75K mi. I knew the car was in need of a new clutch when I bought it. It was heavy and with 75K It was about the right time. It never slipped, just felt stiff and gritty for lack of better words. I have a track 911 so this one is my Sunday driver. With that in mind I kept it all stock. Sachs and Fidanza. What a difference a new clutch makes. Soooo smooth. There are some small plastic pieces that should be updated while they are in there. Also let them update the RMS and several bolts while in there. The cost is small at this time.

Fidanza doesn't make a LWF for the new cars. This is a misprint in their old catalogue the new catalogue doesn't list the 996. If you want a LWF get the Aasco unit. Do not use a stock unsprung disc with a LWF. Get an aftermarket sprung disc, you will have no noise and a solid disc is not made to work with a solid flywheel. I am happy with my Spec clutch setup. The new flywhee will come with a new pilot bearing and the clutch kit should come with a release bearing. Most would suggest to update to the newest RMS but personally if there are no signs of leaking I leave it alone, but then again I do all my own work so if it leaks at a later date it really is no big deal to me.

todd,

DOPE INFO dude, much appreciated =D. heard little about Aasco lwfw and will probably go that route along with a sprung clutch kit from SACHS. I have no idea if she is leaking from the RMS but I do notice oil level declined over the past 3-4 months since i had oil/filter changed. i'm thinking since the tranny and clutch are out, the RMS job should be looked into. again thanks for you help

finally getting new clutch (SPEC stage 1) with the AASCO lightweight flyweel, and RMS replaced. My shop called me back and doesnt know where an oil leak is coming come but tagarted an area right below crankshaft which appears to be a bearing with 3 bolts. anyone got any ideas or suggestion on this?

i hope i dont have to remap the ECU too! anyone else have this setup? did you remap ECU due to the car stalling in nuetral?

The leak below the the crankshaft is the IMS (intermediate shaft seal). When they replace that they should use new micro-encapsulated bolts (or it will leak again).

You should not have to re-map your DME but it would be wise to reset it by removing the battery for 5 minutes so that that it can re-learn it's adaptation.

what up Loren

you seem to be the 'almighty porsche god' so i bow down to you o wise one. well i got my car back a few days ago and i must say i noticed a difference in response and noise. i love the response enough to deal with the noise (clutch chatter), if anyone else is contemplating the upgrade, DO IT! im not sure of a few things though. one of which, is this clutch adjustable??? and how come since i have got the car back i smell something like burnt clutch smell? is this normal till it breaks in or this smell will be there forever? i can't say im burning the clutch up cuz it bites like a mofo :cursing: and i have been driving porsches my whole life. any indication as to what the horrid smell is and if it will go away?

p.s. BUY THE SPEC STAGE 1 CLUTCH KIT + AASCO LWF FOR SOME WEEKEND FUN!!!!! :drive:
