Sport Techno Wheel installation question.

Dus10R

Recommended Posts

I bought a used set of Sport Techno wheels for a 996 TT, they came with a bag that had spacers and new bolts. Are they optional installment or must they be used to fit the Sport Techno's to a Turbo? There's only two spacers, do they go on the back or the front? And... How do you install them? Never had to use them before...

Thanks for any help.

How thick are the spacers ?

Are the lug bolts red?

They are 17mm thick and they look like Porsche part #'s 361 6 17 00 and they say "Made in Germany"

There are two stacked on top of each other in the pics with the studs sticking through. What are the black caps that look like lug nuts used for?

Porsche says 17 mm are ok on the rear and 5 mm on the front. They only say no chains with the spacers.

Are they required for the wheel fitment? Or is it a personal preference? Any negatives to running them?

Not required - optional as long as they are TT spec wheels.

No negatives that I can think of.

So that I don't sound like a complete toolbag; I don't have the car yet, I just bought it and it's my first Porsche, so I haven't seen the hub area to extrapolate how these things fit. They came with a bag with locking type wheel bolts (I'm used to lug nuts so the whole bolt thing is new to me) and the bolts have this odd half egg shaped centering gizmo just below the head. I see on the spacer where those centering balls fit, or at least that what the indentations look like. How do the spacers attach to the hub area.

Sorry for the newb questions, I'm just trying to shorten my learning curve before the car arrives.

Thanks

The 17 mm spacer fit differently than the 5 mm spacers.

The 17 mm spacer get put on first with the original wheel bolts. Then you mount the tire on the exposed studs and tighten the log nuts provided.

The 5 mm spacer are just screwed on to the wheel hub and then you use the longer (red) wheel bolts.

The 5 mm kit looks like this.

Cool, thanks for the info. So where can you buy a locking lug nut set for the spaced wheels? The spacers will be secured with OE locking bolts, so I don't guess I have to worry about anyone stealing my spacers once they remove the wheels...hehe.

Thanks again for the info. I feel better understanding the ins and outs of everything I undertake.

Happy Holidays!

As far as I know the 17mm spacers ARE required for the stock Sport Techno rims - they have a different offset than the hollow spokes. You are supposed to mount the spacers with the lug BOLTS (not yelling - just pointing this out) that you would normally mount hollow spokes with then mount the tire/rim on the studs of the spacer and use the lug NUTS (ditto) from the spacers for the tire/rim. Funny thing is there is no way to prevent theft of the rim/tire combo this way - I remember inquiring about this at the dealer a while back. Hope that helps!! T2
