Squeaky Door Handles/Pulls

When opening the doors from the outside I've begin noticing that the releases/handles are squeaking...what is the proper way to lubricate these things? I just don't want to spray silicone/WD 40 in the two small openings without knowing where the lube is going.

Perhaps if I spray some lube directly into the two areas that are visable from the outside it might work and it doesn't look like it will do any harm.
