Can I get directions on how to access/remove the fan inside the dash?

A couple of Boxster folks (same HVAC unit) have found the noise to be weatherstripping falling down into the air inlet under the pollen filter - then flapping on the fan. I would certainly check there first.

Only in a very cases has it been a motor problem.

just take off the pollen filter and the flaps covering the hole to the HVAC, reach down and start grabbing around?

If you don't have any success going through the pollen filter opening, you might try going through the heater core opening just forward of the windshield, assuming it is similar to a Boxster in that area. A poster named "rsfeller" did a write up (with photos) on repairing the flap door with the defective foam recently, and he went in through the heater core opening IIRC.

If I can find the post, I will post a link here.

Also, if it does turn out to be a defective heater blower motor (which as Loren stated is very unlikely), I believe that the blower motor for a VW Jetta Wagon 2.8 is the same part, for about 1/3 the price.
