I've got a '99 boxster that's making a chirping/squeeking sound from the left engine area. I took it to a local place (Autoscope in Dallas) who says it's a worn camshaft journal that will require pulling the engine and a lot of work. Should I get a second opinion? I've done all of my own maintenance on it so when the chirp started I tried troubleshooting it myself but couldn't find anything.

ok he thinks it's a fouled camshaft due to oil sludge, which is not repairable. He is quoting $9900 for a new engine plus $1500 for labor. I really have no idea what to do. I still owe $10,000 on the car and the KBB value is only $13,500 in great condition.

it's got about 80,000 miles, I've been replacing the oil roughly every 6000 miles or so using only the fully synthetic Mobil 1 (10w30). I bought it used at around 55,000 miles so god only knows what the previous owners did.

ok, I talked to another shop who said if it really is a fouled camshaft then the official Porsche repair method is a new engine. I can tow it in to them and they'll be able to better guess at what the problem is (though there's no way to know for sure without taking it apart). The sound is definitely coming from inside the engine though.

I selected the oil based on this: http://www.986faq.com/2-0/default.asp#011 being in Dallas, the temperature rarely gets below freezing (and I have a garage for when it does).

If I have to spend over $10k to repair it, I'd rather just buy a new car. This brings me to my next question: what can I do with my old one? I know I won't be able to sell it for what I owe, so I'm going to take a loss either way. Can I sell it for parts? Any guess on how much I could get for it? Other than this, it's in good condition.

Binaryc, possibly consider an engine swap.

The updated info regarding oil now states 0W40 synthetic. Mobil 1 is also recommended, as some other brands are too.

Pretty annoying to have a loose spark plug and two "professional Porsche auto mechanics" tell you it's new motor time. I guess we all fall short at times. Always good to confirm the diagnosis with others before handing over your credit card. Whew!!

Wow this is amazing,

My 996 has been making exactly the same sound recently. It's intermittant and doesn't do it everytime i drive the car. I was telling my wife about it and she said "why don't you ask the guys on that website you always are on?".

To think that a mechanic would want to replace the motor is really scary. This site is worth it's weight in gold. I will make another contribution!

Question: What is the proper Ft lbs of torque for the spark plugs?

Thanks for this thread!

Thanks to Phillip I found this thread. My 07 997S is getting this intermittent chirpping sound too; my car has about 7000 miles and I've been noticing it for the last 2000 miles or so. I'd apprciate any more info anyone may have.

Thanks

Wow, who knew the loose-spark-plug-chirp would be so common! Glad it was an easy fix. I know that noise drove me nuts for a long time!

:renntech: I am sooooo grateful for finding this thread...Sorry to open it up again but I had the same problem, had a mechanic look at it (former Porsche dealer mechanic with his own business) who couldnt figure it out. I raised the car, and all felt tight except for one....which wasnt really loose and but I could crank it down about 3/4 turn more before it got to the 25-ft lb point....voila...no more noise....

Thnks a bunch....this renntech forum is the best... B)

A defective oil/air separator also causes a chirping sound for those who can confer there is not a loose spark plug.
