I had all of the likely suspects that previous threads had indicated on my 2000 S. Hard to turn, etc. and recently when pulling my key out nothing happened (still thinks the key is in and difficult to reinsert the key) or a very delayed reaction. Replaced the 4A0-905-849-B part and nothing has changed. I've noticed that the click (steering lock?) has a very delayed response. Perhaps I need a complete switch assembly? any BTDT would be appreciated

Well its obvious from the issues with the steering lock that its the tumbler assembly thats craping out on you. That costs more than the electrical part im sure.

I hope that you don't need the lock cylinder assembly. In case you do, for your 2000 S, with what they call a "stipulated lock number", the correct part # is 996 347 917 01, and it's about $350 at the dealer. Try board sponsor Sunset for a better price.

If the click is slow to respond, that sounds like a mechanical part is gummed up... I'd try going to a lock smith and seeing if they can spray it up alittle with some lube to help loosen up what ever is sticking.

I just finished installing my switch asembly w/ a wretched back of course! Saved over $400 quoted to repair the problem by consulting this site. Thanks for the related links and info. The VW parts guy said that the part would not work on my BoxsterS 00 being it is not a VW He was wrong, problem solved.

Be sure to do your research before taking any dealer's word for what will and will not be interchangeable. There are many parts that are common to VW's, Porsche's and Audi's, and probably many more to come with the new corporate structure. The trick is find out what they don't want you to know, otherwise they wouldn't be able to charge you from three to ten times the price for what is EXACTLY the same part, except for its wrapper or box.

For example, the heater blower motor for a Boxster is the same as the heater blower motor for a Jetta Wagon 2.8 liter. Porsche charges about $317 for the part, VW charges $121. Both parts have a prominent "VW" logo embossed on the part.
