Navigation DVD help for '06 997 please...

I purchased my 997 used from Santa Barbara Porsche a couple weeks ago with 3,800 miles on it. When I went to pick it up, the Navigation DVD was missing, so their parts department ordered one and shipped it to me.

The Navigation DVD I received from Porsche (OEM manuf. part #000 044 900 89, 995 044 900 08, T1000-9894, Version 08.2005, PCM DVD-Navigation North America). After I inserted the DVD into into the Navigation system (yes, checked to make sure I instered it the label side up), and attempted to use the Navigation system, I immediately got an error message that read ""incompatable Navigation DVD".

My research tells me that there are other versions of the Nav DVD available...

1) OEM manuf. part #997 642 257 02, 7L5.919.859.AC, Version 04.2005, North America

2) OEM manuf. part #997.642.257.03, 7L5.919.859.AL, Version 05.2006, North America

How do I find out if I have the correct version of the Nav DVD for my 997? Is the problem the wrong version of the Navigation DVD itself or is it that I have to have my PCM updated with some new firmware? I've read through many of the articles in this forum, but I'm still at a loss for what to do.

If the problem is that I have a newer version of the Nav DVD than what my system expects, I don't understand why my Porsche dealer's part's department would have ordered the wrong item in the first place.

It Happens. The Porsche parts book is not the best. IMO

It came out of another car on the floor as my car didn't have one either. I bought my car used with 5,000 miles on it from the dealer in 06.

On the PCM, press the MAIN and TRIP buttons tegether and post back what version the software level is at (top left of the display).

Thank you for letting me know what your version of the Nav disc is for your 2006. It's clearly different than the one they ordered for me. I've been trying to get the Porsche dealer to order me the same one (that you have) but they keep insisting that the one they sent me is the right one. I now have to take it into my local Porsche dealer to see what they say. Thanks again.

Posted my values next to yours. Hope it helps. FWIW I used to like my Porsche NAV system after this weekend in N. Ga I will be using my Portable Garmin in the Future. It is much better.

Thanks for sharing the values of your nav software! That gives me a lot of info to take with me to the dealer tomorrow morning. Sounds like I don't have a lot to look forward to once I do get the nav system working. I also have a Garmin Nuvi, but was hoping that I would have to stick that on my windshield. Seems crazy that Porsche can't put in a decent navigation system on a $90k+ car. My wife and I have a 01 Range Rover and a 05 Toyota Prius and both have navigation systems. The Range Rover's nav is kind of lame but the Prius' nav is terrific -- way better than the Garmin Nuvi 660 or 350. My point is that the Prius is a $25k car and they put an awesome nav system in it. Maybe Porsche's strategy is that it's not about getting to your destination... it's about the drive getting there, even if you get lost.

Also, and this needs confirming because i can't remember this exactly, but the "Target" refers to what component the PCM system is expecting (ie: as programmed) while the "actual" refers to what was detected on the MOST ring.

Those with missing Target values, do you also get exclamation marks in triangles next to the entries by any chance?

The real software running on the PCM is the number on the top corner of the screen within the special menu as i said earlier. Its this number that the OPC will want to know before they can confirm whether there is indeed an update to your system.

I get the triangle you mentioned next to the CD changer. I assume I get this because I don't have a CD changer.

Hmm....

Been reading your post with interest as I too have a similar issue. I wanted to update the PCM 2.1 on my 2005 Boxster S (also has BOSE) so that I could use a more up to date Navigation DVD and search by POSTCODE.

I downloaded a set of update disks from a Bit Torrent site, burned them to CD and the Nav Disk to DVD and ran the update on my system. No problem, the system updated and after each action I got "System OK" ran the second disk and again no problem.

So all systems go. Inserted the new (copied) 2006 Nav disk in the Nav DVD in the trunk - it updated and hey presto I now have a system which says it is Software version 3 and I can search by postcode!

Phone, Amp, Bose, CD Changer and PCM all working fine.

Except.....

Now when I check the software versions I get a "/" in the Target and a number in the "Actual" like: 05024AD1/0205.

So I too have the little warning triangles!!!! Gerrrrr....

Is this a big deal? Should I worry? It all seems to work OK!

Have I used the wrong update disks?

If you get the triangles, just ask the OPC to plug in the PIWIS and perform a module discovery. They will then write back the details of you system to the PCM and sort out the error. SHould be non-chargeable.

It won't stop you from using the system but its more or a niggling problem than anything else.

Version 3.3 is the latest available too.

No problem.

IIRC, if you're just about within warranty, the OPC will do it for you FOC. Otherwise, i really am not sure what they'll say as the extended warranty is a bugger when it comes to the PCM. Apart from that, i don't think there's any other way.

The more popular indi's do have the tester.

I dont think the early PCM's can be updated past version 3 as they dont support the MP3 function that is found in the later PCM's. If your car is pre mid 2005 build and doesnt have MP3 then I'd stick with the version 3. Version 3 supports post code search and the latest map DVD's (2007). I have an early PCM in my sept 2004 build 987 s and I'm running the latest maps. I have heard that the pcm does sometimes need to be incrementally updated with map versions as it can soemtimes give these error messages if you try to jump from 2005 maps to 2007 in one go.
