Lowering soft top minimum temperature?

I have a MY02 2.7 with the glass hood conversion, a couple of weeks back I had the glass break, I came out to my car to find the window frosted, shattered yet intact, this makes me think it wasnt vandalism because if it was it would of been pushed through. An engineer said it was possibly stressed in some way last time I had the hood down and during the night it just gave way and shattered, apparently toughened glass has a tendency to do this?

Chatting to some friends the weekend they said they had heard that the Boxster Glass hood types are strongly advised that you do not lower the roof in temperatures lower than 8 degrees???? Have you heard of this?

My whole hood cover a glass had to be replaced so I need to know the precautions, I am scared to lower the roof ever again!

Are you in another country? 8 degrees is pretty cold, even in Celcius. I probably wouldn't put the top down if the temperature were lower than ~50 (F).

The answer will be in your Owners Manual. I think for the 987 Boxster, I remember reading something about temps below 35-40 degrees F it was not advisable to lower the top. I need to re-read this section to make sure.

Lloyd, you should also shoot an e-mail over to your conversion top manufacturer and ask them that question too. Possible they will offer some type of warranty or rebate towards a new purchase.

Porsche manual states to not open the soft top at temperatures below 30F. I opened mine in the garage while the temp was hovering around there and it moved very slow and now just makes a clicking noise. It would seem the Cabriolets engine is running but the roof is not moving now. :huh:

Where is the clicking noise coming from?

Is it coming from the rear center of the convertible top well (i.e., from the electric motor just forward of the third brake light) ?

Or is it coming from one (or both) of the convertible top transmissions (just aft of and under the base of each B-pillar?

If the former, it could just be that one (or both) of your drive cables have "retracted" or become frayed inside their housings.

Do a search here for a post by Tool Pants. That will explain what to check for those cables.
