My fuel gauge was almost empty, when I added gas - not a full tank, but about $10 worth (why you ask am I such a skinflint? I am shipping the car, so it must only have a bare minimum of gas to get it on and off the ship!)

The gauge now reads below the empty line and the red light is on.

I added more gas (another $10) , but it still reads the same.

Any ideas?

Don't know if this is related, but I just had my MAF replaced.

Not much I can do about this until the car gets to the UK (in about 6 weeks), but wanted to get an idea of what I could be up against!

Thanks!

My guess is that the gauge measures the gas in a non-linear way because of the shape of the gas tank. This is also the reason why the dial takes longer to drop from full tank to half than from half to empty.

Sounds like this is a new condition? I'd check the evaporative control system for proper venting. If you are not tightening the cap properly or the cap is faulty the vent could be the problem.

Altho you'd expect a CEL, I think.

Good luck with the shipping.
