Hi, I recently purchased an '04 Cayenne S for winter/family uses (trying to extend my Porsche season!). The vehicle has 71K miles on it, and very recently it started to idle roughly. It seems to be ok at speed. Anyway, today the CE light came on, and my generic OBDII gave me a reading of P2189: Too lean at idle speed, bank 2. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what could be causing this? Is it O2 or airmass meter? If so is that a DIY type job on these? Help, I'm new to front engines :)

Probably the MAF sensor, you can switch the sensors from the left to the right completely to be sure. Clear the fault codes first.

Thanks, that crossed my mind. Could you tell me where those (mafs)are on this vehicle? Also, something I read (someone w/a similar problem) indicated that it could be a fuel filter. Does that seem possible with this code? Thanks for the help & follow-up!!!

The MAF's are located in the intake pipes just behind the radiators. The fuel filter supply both banks, this is not the reason i guess.

If swapping the sensors doesnt cause a code now on that bank, I would look at the purge control valve. This is a common problem, its essentially a vacuum leak at the wrong time causing a lean condition and rough idle.

Thanks for all the input! I located the mafs (not as hard as the mid/rear engines!), and was able to unplug the connector, but haven't yet been able to remove/swap them (don't have a tool for the star bit with the center piece). Anyway, I discovered that the left bank only seems to have four connector pins, and the right has five. Is that correct? It appears that there are only four wires leading to the left side connector and five on the right. I thought maybe that's how the system differentiates the sides. If so, does it work to swap sensors for the test? Also, after unplugging the connectors and plugging them back in, I erased the codes and fired the engine. after a minute of running, the cel came back. This time, 3 codes: P0300, 304 & 305. Cylinder mis-fire codes. Are these also consistent with this diagnosis? Tomorrow I find a way to tap those screws and remove the sensors. Thank you again for all your support!

The MAF fixation for Cayenne and 987 is different thy use no longer Torx screws = 6 points star, but practically the same design with 5 points star. If you want to swap them for a test take the complete unit. vizcarra44 can by right if it is a common problem on US cars. Concerning the misfire codes watch the coils for cracking.

Okay, I switched the maf's, and now I've gotten the code P0305 twice (cylinder 5 misfire?), and still getting the "shake"/vibration. Any ideas as to what this could be indicative of? Could that still indicate maf issue, or something else? I sure do appreciate all the help and input!!!

Hi everyone, newbie to the forum. 1st Porsche also, a 04' cs.

I just purchased this vehicle on an off lease. I had one of the dealers pull all the records for me and it looks like all the recall stuff had been done.

I am experiencing the same issue with a rough idle and only when it's hot. After a night of cool down, it runs fine.

I was wondering if your porblem was ever resolved and with what. I get a CEL and then it goes away. I know that I need to pull the code and should have the DuraMetric tool some time next week. Just lookin' for some insight.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Without the code(s) everything is just a wild guess.

Ok, got em'.

P0355 Ignition coil primary

P0300 Random multiple misfire

P0305 Cylinder 5 misfire

I guess this kinda answers my first question. Is this a very difficult job, I wonder. The dealer wants 565 to do the job. Is this a good price?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Chris

IMHO that is way too much.

Is your car under warranty - if so those cracked ignition coils should be replaced free.

If it is not under warranty, all the coil packs should be replaced - there is a TSB on this.

Warranty just ran out. Surprise. I had called the dealer where the car had always been service and they gave me the quote. These parts are all over the internet for 18 dollars each.

I am mechanically inclined and have worked on many vehicles, including installing a supercharger on my new Toyota truck.

Am I thinking it's more than just removing the covers and changing a pnp part?

Has anyone documented the proceedure? Is there any service manuals floatin' around?

Thanks Loren, I found some very insightful information here. Call is in to the (2nd) dealer to plead my case. Otherwise I will buy a set of new coil packs and do them myself.

Thanks again, great forum here!
