I have a 2000 Cab tiptronic (50K) and just installed K&N's #63-7000, the one that replaces the air box with a conical filter. Drove great for 40 miles then the ABS & PCM light come on, then car starts to drive like s#@t...then the CEL light appears. From searching the forum it seems like the MAS is toast. So I tried cleaning it by spraying a little alcohol (pure) in the various holes and wires, but the car still won't idle or run right. Do I need to try a contact cleaner, or buy a new MAS ?? As I write this I am soaking the filter in hot water & detegent to remove any oil. Any advice is greatly appreciated !!

:D

Update....new MAS in and everything works....my advice is if anyone goes with the K&N setup is to soak the filter in hot water and detergent to remove all the oil before you install....was amazed at how much oil and red dye came out...thanks to all who read & advised !!!

I have replied to these sort of posts for several years now...I have heard many suggest cleaning the MAF...with CRC or Circuit board cleaner or whatever. I have yet to hear someone clean one after throwing codes as you describe (ABS/PSM & CEL) and bring it back to life (I have 3 sitting in a box from my V-flow experiment). That doesn't mean you can't try, unfortunately I think is has already fried. Cleaning as a PM I understand, but after the fact...too late.

yup, my mass air flow sensor went a few months after the install of my k and n intake, and a liberal dousing of contact cleaner could not revive it.

Man,

I'm sorry so many people are having problems with those K&N kits

I would hope that more people would be more cautious (and read the feedback here) when thinking about those kits. I hear nothing but CEL and fried MAF stories. Not to mention that when you end up putiing the stock system back on you have drilled holes in your car!

Amazing that K&N would still promote these kits as viable for Porsches.

I have done things to my 996 that were a mistake as well.
