Easy - release the boot from the console by prying up on the rear 'corners' to release the clips and then same on front - will slide out slightly from under batwing. You shouldn't have a set screw (on dash side of the shifter where boot meets knob) but if you do loosen it. Then, put your top down and sit in the passenger seat. Using the floor boards for leverage and with the car in reverse, pull up on the knob. Be careful when it releases to not hit yourself in the noggin as some have reportedly done ;).

It's a compression fitting w/ an adhesive on it. Might slightly twist the knob left and right to try and release the glue or leave it parked in the sun to heat up a bit before trying to pulling up.

Go to it!

Your right! just like that. Dental work still in place. A guy on PPBB was incredulous (as I was after I read his post) when he heard the official word from a Porsche tech on the matter “pull knob off”. He tried and only succeeded by heating the shaft up with a heat gun.

I used a propane torch (nothin’ like a sledge hammer for me), as low as I could get it, to warm things up. Probably didn’t help much cause knob popped right of, no sign of adhesive (my reason for heating it up).

Any way thanks a lot...

There is no adhesive on the metal shift lever to hold the standard knob in place. There is a dry lubricant that is yellow in color and it gets hard with age. If you look at the slides for the clamshell the same type lubricant is used. But it does look and feel like a glue.

If you look at the top of the metal shift lever blade there is a groove. That is what keeps the knob from pulling off.

When the local group filmed several B&M installs I asked Aileen to be in it. She can pull of the knob with one hand and blindfolded....

Sorry to revive a 13 year old thread but as this is the first google result for "986 Shifter Removal" I would like to add that the Sport Design Package shifter has a set screw. I nearly pulled a disk by following the "just pull" method. For the sport shifter, invert the boot and undo the set screw with a #5 allen key.
