Last year I put a rebuilt gear box (Powerhaus II) into my '99 C4 due to a problem with third gear.

Today on the way to lunch I shifted into second gear and around 3,000 RPM the engine 'broke loose' from gear. It sounded and felt like a slipping clutch. No grinding, no noises, no warning. The other five gears work just fine. I can shift into second smoothly, but the there is no power getting to the drivetrain.

I don't track the car and I don't race. Is it possible that I've won the statistical lottery and lost two transmissions in thirteen months? Any ideas?

Call Powerhaus and find out what gives?

I have already talked to them and they are being MORE than helpful in standing behind their work. So far so good. However, although they have theories they cannot diagnose the problem without seeing the box. 13 hours is the quote to remove and reinstall the transmission. I have an appointment to get the work started on Tuesday morning.

So far the leading though from the PowerHaus tech is that the Dog Ring on the Speed Gear for second has come unwelded. :help:

I am hoping (wishing, praying, etc.) to get an answer along the lines of, "This happened to me, but it was only (insert simple, cheap solution here)."

Ugh. Remving the transaxle is reallly not difficult, assuming you can get the thing on a lift or really high jackstands. Good to hear that they are standing behind their work. Keep us posted.
