As I was driving I heard two knocks from the back. It sounded like I ran over a plastic bottle and it got thrown around in the wheel arch. But when I got out of the car while it was on I heard this metalic tapping sound...It's never made this noise before and the car still drives fine. Temperature is normal and oil pressure is normal.

I recorded a sound clip, the sound I'm talking about is very clear.

 Engine Sound

Sounds like an exhaust manifold leak to me or a compression leak. Not good... better find a shop that can check it out. I would not drive the car - just to be safe.

I thought I heard some metal to metal sounds just as the motor was shutting down. Maybe your recorder was very close to the motor, but it didn't sound right to me.

I personally thought it sounded like the valve lifters tapping away quite loudly. I'm certainly no mechanic and it is only my opinion. I believe you can hear them increase in frequency as the engine increases revs.

Sounded like the valve lifters tapping away quite loudly. you could also hear them increase in frequency as the engine increases revs.

Don´t like the sound of that :o

.....A little later.... B)

Have just been down starting my engine. I can´t even hear my lifters.

Had a sond just like that on my RangeRover V8, it was an exhaust manifold leak.

One hour labour and I was on the road again with no clicking sound, hope you can have the same luck.

That sounds like an exhaust or header leak to me. Lifters would sound like marbles, connecting rods would be a loud KNOCK.

The Year is 2003. I got the car back and the service rep told me there was a blockage in the oil system. He wasn't more specific but the car runs fine now and there is a lot more power. But what really annoys me is they fixed the car by driving it around until it just unblocked?!!! Well doesn't really make sense to me but it the car is fine now.

What?...They drove your car even though they knew full well "there was a blockage in the oil system" ? What is this? Damned the oil starvation! keep their finger acrosed & just drove it until it's fixed or get a new engine from Porsche? and geee... I thought it was part of their job to find out what caused the oil blockage?
