Rattle Trap

I have a '99 996 C4 I puchased back in March which now has rattle issues! They are coming from the engine compartment, inside driver's and passeger side doors as well as what appears to be clunking noise from the front and rear suspension when going over bumps.

I've read the threads on the CAT issues, I'll get under there a poke round this weekend to see if I can find anything. I've also searched on various suspension threads on those write-ups. Couldn't find anything known on the doors though.

My question is, should this be happening on a vehicle with a litte over 36000 miles and an engine that was factory replaced with now only 15000 miles? Should I be replacing suspension parts this soon?

My '99 BMW M3 had 46000 miles when I traded it for the 996, the only problem I hand with it was the battery! :soapbox: :cursing:

Door rattle (and other interior rattles) have fixes in the TSB section. Since you are a Contributing Memeber you can read any of those TSBs.

Rattles in the engine compartment are usually a heat shield or a muffler with a broken weld -- very rarely a cat.

A thump when going over a bump is likely a loose rear swaybar.

Also check the anti-roll (sway) bar drop links. Any play in one of the ball joints gets amplified really well.

The rattle in the engine bay might be the airbox - the grommets in the body often come out, and the pin on the bottom of the airbox rattles against the metal.

Rattles!!! Arrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh! Mine rattles and squeaks everywere inside and as i understand it many 996's do. I've sorted a few, but in the end its just too many and not enough time...... I sympathise.........

Oh, my 996TT exhaust shield is loose and that rattles, but cant here it from the inside when driving.

Have you tried clicking on the "Quick Menu" at the top of the page? There are many special features available there including a TSB listing.
