V8 Oil Change

My dealer wants $675 to change the oil on my 2005 Cayenne S. I searched the forum but did not see a DIY. Anyone care to share or post a link. Thank you I assume it will be cheaper :D

Should be under $75.

Only the V6 had an oil change ... I thought the S was a Service which was more than "just" an oil change

Don't forget that Cayennes require dealer to reset the maintenace light!

The Durametric Software will reset the light as will a PST2 or PIWIS -- but the Durametric software is thousands cheaper than the Porsche tools.

Thanks I might pick that up as well, kinda stinks that for the 2005 and up it can only read a few items unlike the earlier models. I do wonder what exactly the oil reminder light reset does, I mean is it just a counter that goes off at 10,000 miles or so? Or is there more intelligence.

I have all the parts I need (including the Durametric tool) but the question I have is should I wait until my "Service engine" light comes on before I do the oil change? I bought my Cayenne CPO (supposed to change the oil) and I have only but 4000 miles on since.

ok I did the oil change on my 2005 Cayenne S and I have to say it was really simple.

I didn't even have to jack the car to remove the panels or drain the oil. It would have been even easier if you did.

Basically here it is:

1- Remove the front plastic under panels (about 7 screws)

2- Now you can remove the rear plactic under panel (about 4 screws)

3- With a 8mm socket wrench unscrew and drain both plugs, clean, and put plugs back in

4- Undo Oil filter housing and discard old filter

5- Install new Oil Filter housing with new filter

6- Re-install rear and then front plastic panels back

7- Fill with 9 quarts of 0-40 Mobil 1

Comments:

They say to replace the trim ring on the oil filter and the aluminum rings on the drain plugs. Although I had all of these parts I ended up not replacing any of them. Reason is that the plastic trim ring was in great condition and would have only been ruined by removing it. Having said that I will replace it next oil change.

The aluminum rings are another story. While also in great condition, the rings that were on the drain were beveled so that they fit super snug with the drain plug while the aluminum rings that I ordered from Porsche were not beveled and although fit perfectly they were not as snug fitting. Again I will change these next time around I think but to do this for each oil change seems like more could go wrong then right. Either way you save little time and money not changing them so for me it was just a judgement call after cleaning and examining all the parts.

Finally for the service light to be turned off you need a Durametric type tool. No way around that unless you want to pay your dealer $200 to turn it off or pay for the $700 oil change. For $225 you can get the durametric which I own and will say that it is "ok" for the Cayenne. A lot of mysterious error codes and bugs in the software (crashes) and I think the 911 owners get the most out of the tool.

All in all I was nervous about doing the oil change but will say it was easier then my old mitsubishi.

HELP PLEASE...I followed the steps below BUT the only second 8mm plug that I found did not have motor oil! when I removed it, some smelly green hue oil drained from it, I'm sure it is nit motor oil...does anyone know what kind of oil might have been in that receptacle as I will have to replace it...also, where is the second 8mm drain plug? I could not find it anywhere...

Here is a picture of the drain plug I wasn't supposed to have removed.

The "other" drain plug that I removed did not have a metal washer seal but a rubber round seal plus the interior dimension was smaller than the motor oil drain plug although I removed it with an 8mm socket wrench...

Ok, I found the second plug but I still don't know what kind of oil I drained by removing the wrong plug, here is a pic of the location. About a quart of some smelly dark greenish almost gray oil came out of this drain.

Thanks for posting oil change instructions. I am surprised why your dealer is charging so much for just the oil change. The dealer in my area is charging less than $200 for the oil change (including oil filter, oil, and drain plug, and washers, and labor, etc).

The price they qouted you might be for a full service which includes air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs, oil change service and refill of other fluids and checks for belts, etc. Please let me know if that is not the case.

I truly support DIY, especially when there is a big price difference. I am not blaming anyone, but it is a good idea to take pics of DIY projects as it helps others a lot (I will be doing this for tail lamp replacement with LEDs and, foglights, and cornering lights replacements with Xenons as soon as I find some free time), as in case of fcien, it would have saved him some hassle if the pics would have been there. But thanks again for posting the instructions.

I think you've opened the drain for the front differential.... although I've never seen under a Cayenne so this is just a guess.

This is very helpful. Thank you very much. I just changed the oil of my pepper S last night. Cost me less than $100 including the oil filter. Nice illustration, where did you get them?

Changed oil on 2009 Cayenne T but dint look for the second plug. Later found this post and started wondering, looked at PET pictures but could not find that second plug neither on oil-conducting housing (948 107 071 54) no on oil pan (there is only one on picutre 900 219 020 31). Am i missing something or these pictures not correct (Pet update 235 - latest). DOnt want to go under and take all panels off just to satisfy my curiosity. Anybody knows? BTW thanks to this forum for a tip about ziplock bags and oil filter changes.
