Recently my 04' 996TT has occational smoking a on startup, usaully after it hasn't be driven for a couple days. Oil consumption is about a quart every

1200 miles, which doesn't seem out of spec. to me. She's running very solid, and has 9200 miles on her. Any reason to be alarmed??

My does the same thing espicially after the AC has been on for a long time, and I havent driven it for a few days. I think it might be condensation from AC. At least that was for me. Maybe water setteling in.

Sounds OK to me. I occasionally get the 'smoke' at startup which should burn off/clear in a few seconds. Its quite random in nature and havent really found the cause of it.....

A theory of mine is if you park up after a drive and pretty much turn engine straight off, I seem to get it then. If you leave ticking ova for a minute or two (should anyway with Turbo) seems to hardly ever happen. Porsche incidentally say this is perfectly normal. My Box S used to do it too. If the smoke continues 'minutes' into startup, then a different 'issue' exists............

i have read in past posts that this is sometimes related to not letting the car cool down before shut off. For what its worth, I have an 02 with 35K and and not burning near that much oil.

I think at the end of the day, if the car doesnt continue to smoke after a few seconds (or while driving) and the oil consumption is well within the spec quoted in the owners manual, then thats what you have and you have to live with it. Think mine uses about 0.25ltrs every 2000mls (approx).

I think Fatboy is on to something. Since I have been following his advice with a engine "cool-down", I have had no smoky starts. Now I do a one minute idle before pulling into the Batcave.

I noticed this today on my 2003 996TT. It was really hot out and I did not cool down the car before shutdown...it had smoke on startup. Thanks, I'll try cooling down next time.

The owners manual says "Do not stop engine immediately after hard or extended driving. Keep engine running at increased idle for about 2 minutes to prevent excessive heat build-up before turning off engine "

Any turbo engine should run idle for at least a minute prior to killing the engine. That's why they have turbo timers, etc. Then you can safely lock the car and walk away while it turns itself off after a set period of time. Maybe not the best solution if you're parking in the garage, tho. lol.

I know of no one with a turbo timer in a 996TT...it does not work with the alarm system...that is you can't lock the car and walk away with the engine running and let the timer shut it off. If you know of something that does this...post the link here.

Yeah, that's normal. You install a relay into your alarm that makes it activate 1 min 20 seconds, etc, after the button is pressed. The doors still lock, but alarm activates after the allotted time for the turbo timer to kill the engine. :)
