Hi,

I've seen several eBay items that sell what seems to be just a ceramic resistor and claim to increase the HP by up to 20hp. It seems that the resistors fools the ECU into thinking that the intake air is cold and so advances the ignition to compensate, producing more power. E.g : http://www.performance-mod.co.uk/

Does anyone know anything about this? Does it work? Is it safe for the MAF?

This is nothing new. This thing is supposed to trick the car computer into thing the engine is cold all the time so it will run a rich mixture, like a car does when it is cold until warmed up.
