Listmates,

Rhetorically (somewhat) I would like some input on the following. I have a Boxster S, and can trade it towards a 911 Cab for about three times the money as adding blowers or some other ridiculous horsepower creating upgrade to my Boxster. Which is the better use of the money? No review of the two has been very helpful so far, saying that past the label pinache and increased horsepower, they are about even. Which boggles me, since one costs about twice what the other does.

Help?

TIA.

Putting a bigger or more powerful motor in the Boxster is a good way to get a super-car on the cheap. For $20k, you can get a good base Boxster, and with another $15k or so, you get put a 3.4 in it with some nice suspension mods (PSS9, anti-roll bars). This should result in an extremely well balanced track monster, and total sleeper.

For a $35k budget, you get something faster, but not necessarily nicer. Porsche has a few nice luxury touches in the 911 you can't or usually don't get in the Boxster. If you're concerned with performance, the Boxster with engine mods will be scary fast. If you're concerned with looks, the 911 is classic and hard to beat.

Yep, if I had the cash, that's what I'd do (and may still if my engine ever goes).....3.4L in a Boxster. Best of both worlds - mid engine handling, Carerra HP. Add PSS9 and GT# bars, or ROW M030 kit and you've got a Killer sports car.......what Porsche would have made the Boxster if it weren't for the fact that it would totally kick the 911's *** then.

A 3.4 really isn't going to give you much over the 3.2, especially for the cost. If you are upgrading a base boxster fine, but to spend the money on a 0.2L displacement increase really isn't worth it. A good exhaust system will put you in the same ballpark as a stock 3.4 albeit a bit down on torque, but not much. If your motor is blown and you have the choice of 3.2 vs 3.4 fine, but to upgrade a good 3.2 to a 3.4 doesn't make much sense to me. Just my $0.02

Never warmed up to the 996 Cab. Always called it a fat Boxster with jump seats in the back....

Depends on which 911 Cab, but with the extra weight, I don't think you'd be seeing much of a performance gain. I also think the Boxster is a better looking convertible even though some people think it is a chick car. If you don't care what other people think or need the extra seats, keep what you have and do some mods.
