I took my alternator to a rebuild shop...they rebuilt it. I put it on and it would work for a while then go to 12 volts, start the car later it would work. They tested it good and tried to say it was my grounding. Long story short ...the rebuilt alternator would quit when the temp in engine compartment got to operating temp. Bought a rebuilt one at Auto Zone and it fixed the problem after taking the alternator in & out 3 times. I got pretty good at it!!

What was Autozone's price for the alternator?

$225.49 plus $90 core charge ...which you get back of course. Lifetime warranty.

Local guy on 6speedonline with a 1999 C4 also put in an Autozone alternator for $169 plus the core. I checked the Kragen site and Kragens also has 996/986 alternators. Looks like you have to swap the pulley.

what was involved in replacing the alternator? was it simple or did it need any special tools?

Thanks
