I have a 1999 Carrera 4 Tiptronic which unfortunatly has developed a strange fault. When driven hard, such as a track day, the temperature warning light flashes even though the temperature gauge is still only reading 80 c as normal. Once the engine is switched of for 5 minutes and restarted all is well until hard driving is resummed.

Whilst under warrenty the main dealer attempted to fix this by changing a sensor. Having not driven the car hard since that repair, unfortunatly the car is now out of warrenty, I wonder if anyone has any ideas or experience of this type of fault.

Jonny, I also have a '99 that I drive at the track and experienced the same problem. I believe it had something to do with the tank and not the sensor. Porsche updated the tank a couple of times. I had a leak in the original tank and replaced it. Since then, I had not had problems with the flashing light after driving at the track. I posted the tank replacement procedure a few months ago. Search for it if interested... Lou

There was a TSB for the 1999 models that replaced the original tank and cap with a redesigned model. If your car never had this TSB performed, I suspect this is the problem. It's quite common on 99's.
