996TT Oil Consumption

Recommended Posts

I am looking at an '04 TT CAB with the X50 package. The car is a CPO at a dealer and I spoke to the prior owner who informed me that the car uses about 1 qt of oil every 1-1.2K miles - which he felt was normal. Although many say that this is within Porsche specs, some feel that this is an engine that is trouble waiting to happen - particularly if I decide to chip it. Everything about the car says that it was well maintained and since I only drive about 5K miles a year, I am not all that worried.....or should I be.

Thoughts?

Oil consumption on these cars varies...with usage, environment, driving style. It is certainly not Outside of expected variation for it to consume that amount of oil. That being said, those that do not experience this will tell you it is way too much...for the mileage you want to do...and the fact you may mod it anyway...what the heck. You only live once!

How many miles on the car?

That sounds like a normal usage to me. If you are really concerned by a 3rd party warranty.

The car has 27K miles and is through a dealer, so it has the additional 2 year CPO warranty which will run until 09/09.

Thanks for the quick response.

Dave

 I am in the same boat. I bought my 2003 TT coupe used with 2000 miles. The car was a garage queen and has used a quart of oil each 1500 miles. I bought an extended warranty and quit worrying about the oil consumption. I had the engine GIAC flashed at 2500 miles and I have 9000 miles on it now. Turbos are to enjoy!

I have a stock 2005 TTS which has 11k miles on it. Never had any trouble at all with the car, and it uses a quart about every 1,000 miles. I believe the usage is due in part to the turbo oil cooling system utilized. The consumption was very un-nerving at first, but I've since gotten past it...since I'm getting many more smiles per mile.

Hummm By that point I'd be considering changing it. I have been told by the dealer that some 01s came with a dipstick. I have never tried to confirm this but it seems like its worth looking into as a double check against the electronic method.

Spawney: Is your car a 996TT? I find it curious that the almost universal oil usage rate for these cars is one quart every 1K to 2K miles...yet you are saying that you use but a minute amount (1 pint) for 6000 miles?

For the record, mine uses about 1 quart every 2K miles.
