I have an 02 C4 Cabriolet.

Recently I have noticed a rattling in the steering column.

It sounds like there is a loose screw moving around inside. It

sounds like it is coming from the section that the wiper and on board

computer 'arms' comes out of.

When I accelerate or slow down something rattles around inside.

Is this a known issue or has anyone ever heard of this problem?

How hard is it to disassemble this part of the car to see

what is rattling around?

THanks

Mike

During our various projects on cars we take dash and trim pieces off. I have found extra hardware, like nuts and bolts, floating around.

If the noise is where the stalks are then you would remove stuff to get to the cover, and just remove the top of the cover. There are connectors under the cover. In the old days Porsche covered the connectors in foam so they would not rattle against the plastic cover.

Then around 2000 Porsche stopped using foam on the connectors. Instead the bottom cover came with intergrated connector holders. The bottom of the cover has slots that the connectors (and wires) slide into to prevent rattles.

I would check to see if the connectors are seated in the holders and that is not the cause of the noise.

The picture is a 1999 Boxster and you can see the foam tape used on a connector to prevent rattles.

So have to remove the steering wheel, etc. Are there any photos of this, where the screws are etc.

Thanks

MM

Those are pictures of me and you are correct, it was doing an OBC retrofit on a 2000 Boxster owned by a local owner. I wish those pictures would go away since they are 6 years old and I do not do it the same way.

Next month looks like we are doing the retrofit on a 1997 Boxster. I would take pictures of the area I think you need to check but since it is a 1997 it will not have the holders in the lower cover as that started in 2000. Your 2002 996 is no different than a 2000-2004 Boxster.

So stop by next month with your car or send over a 2000-2004 996. So I can take pictures of where the rattle noise might be coming from.
