engine compartment fan

Need some help. I got a 1999 carrera cabriolet with 15,000 miles on it. Bought it used about 8 months ago. The engine compartment fan has never come on... Even when driving it it hot weather. My temperature guage reads a little over 180, but still the engine cooling fan does not come on.. Any advise on how to check the fan or engine sensor?

The engine compartment purge fan rarely comes on. Mine has only come on twice -- and I live in 90 plus degree California! Here are the conditions the fan comes on at.

From the service manual...

"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.

After-running of engine compartment fan

If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds."

Is there anyway to have the fan switch on at lower temp? Change thermostat? Prolly a ECU job.

Just as a comparison, the fan on my 2006 987 comes on a lot, nearly on all the time in hotter weather, seem to run forever, certainly not just 20 seconds. It does eventually go off.

Loren, your comment makes me wonder if it is working as designed or because the boxster engine is so confined it requires more purging?

Check that the temperature sensor hasn't fallen out and onto the engine block - this will cause the fan to come on (been there done that).

The sensor sits inbetween the 1st and 2nd induction tube on the top right hand side of the engine (looking at the rear of the car) - if it's not there, then that is your problem ...

It should just slot back in - remove the rubber grommet, put the sensor back in, then put the whole lot back..

Possibly both. :) My 986 fan comes quite a bit since I got it. It seems to me the 996 would probably have a lot better heat dissipation in the engine compartment with the open rear deck lid. I'll have check that heat sensor though.

Hmm will need to look at this on the weekend. My engine copartment fan on my 02 C2 cab comes on alot and stays of for extended periods of time.
