I have a question regarding my 2002 996 Carrera Coupe2S 6 speed. I bought it from a dealer approximately 3 months ago with a two year warranty. It has 45k on it and is in Ca. This is my first Porsche, it is my daily driver, and I love it.

Yesterday I went to lunch and was doing a little hot rodding. I parked it, then after work when I started it up, a substantial amount of white smoke with a blue tint started pouring out of it. This lasted about 5 minutes, and decreased over the 5 minutes until there was no more. I drove it home (45 miles) and it seemed fine, no warning lights of any kind. I started it up a couple of times last night and had no smoke. I drove it to work today (45 miles) without any problems or smoke.

How concerned should I be? Any ideas or experience with this?

Thanks for any input you may have, and thanks to this forum for all the great information you all put out.

Was the oil level very high (full or a little over full) - then that would be normal.

Otherwise look for leaks.

Thanks for the response Loren.

The oil level appears to be fine. I haven't added any oil since I got it 3 months ago. I'll look for a leak, however there has been no sign of a leak under the car. If it was a leak wouldn't it be unusual to just happen the one time as opposed to everytime I started it up? I know little about Porsche and how to work on it. Would you recommend I take it into the dealer, or wait for it to happen again? The car was Porsche certified so I have a two year warranty.

Thanks again. you and the members provide an invaluable service. I have learned quite a bit from reading the Forum.

Although I am not yet I expect to be paying member soon.

Allen, do a search on "white smoke" and you will find some interesting stories.

Apparently, if your oil level is on the high end, and you push the car hard, especially thru' a tight corner, you'll get a Puffin'Billy, and that could continue at startup the next day, (just for a min or a few secs) or for several days before it eventually clears up.

I'll do that.

Thanks Cosmos

You'll be pleased to know that this is nothing to worry about. The "hot rodding" is the clue. If you are pulling high G (Especially on right hand turns for some reason?) oil from the sump can find its way into the air box which then subsequently goes in with the fuel next time you start it up. There is a fix for this problem if you do a lot of tracksdays or just enjoy a bit of drifting/hot rodding, which involves extra sump baffles I think. If the oil level is high then this will make matters worse. If smoke continues after a few minutes, then you have a problem!

That's a relief! Thanks for the info, I will sleep better now.
