Hi,

I am planning on doing the OBC hack, I read over the OBC hack page, and the wiring seems pretty simple. My questions are about the switch?

If I use the fool well light switch will the light on it illuminate?

What is the backlight function people talk about using the 996TT switch for?

Where can I get the FWL switch? (Sunset doesn't have them)

Could I use a blank switch the one pictured below?

Where can I get a blank switch like this?

Also, I am going to do the spoiler switch hack as well. Does anyone know where to get a left tilted gloss spoiler switch?

There is no blank switch.

The spoiler switch was for the turbo. Unlike the turbo your 1999 switches are canted. So when you put the switch in your 1999 the spoiler icons will be on an angle.

Also, could I paint over the white outline with gloss black paint? To make the switch more nondescript.

I can't tell what the picture is. If it looks like these then it is the "dummy" switch to cover the oval hole. It is not a real switch - just a cover for the hole.

People have changed the white icon or eliminated the white icon part of the switch, but I forget what they were doing. The footwell switch is about as nondescript as it gets. Most people use this switch for the OBC as it is.

996.613.980.00 is the gloss switch.

Sandy's comments about switch choices and lighting:

For your OBC, you might want to try a 996TT spoiler switch body (996.613.155.00) which has the toggle (rocker) replaced with the one from your footwell lights switch. This would allow you to have night illumination without having to internally modify your FWL switch.

The 996TT spoiler switch has its internal night illumination circuitry completely isolated from the switch contacts. This provides a lot of flexibility in connecting up to the illumination wiring in the car.

Before you snap the FWL switch toggle onto the spoiler switch's body, you would only have to place a dab of black paint, or a small piece of black tape, over the BACK side of the toggle's "lens" (normally located over the amber LED). You have to do this because there are TWO night illumination LEDs in the spoiler switch's body.

Here's the info I believe is required to hook up the night illumination pins on a 996TT spoiler switch body. There are two options:

Parallel pin 3 of the 996TT spoiler switch with the RED/BLACK wire on the PSM/TC OFF switch. Also, parallel pin 5 of the 996TT spoiler switch with the GREY/BLUE/BROWN wire on the PSM/TC OFF switch.

The second option would be:

Parallel pin 3 of the 996TT spoiler switch with the GREY/BLUE/RED wire on the intermittent wiper rotary control. Also, parallel pin 5 of the 996TT spoiler switch with the BROWN wire on the same control.

If neither component is available to connect to, the first choice color combination should be available at the switches over on the other side of the panel.

They don't have it but I will call them.

I called them, and they can order it but they are not sure if it is gloss or matte.

Does anyyone know if the FWL switch with the part number #996.613.980.00 is gloss or matte?

I spoke to the parts manage at my local dealership and we think this is what is going on. His name is Enrico at Stevens Creek Porsche in San Jose if you want to order it from him. 408-247-1655.

If you look in the current PET you cannot find 996 613 980 00, which is the gloss footwell switch. Only the matte fotwell switch is listed. But there are 3 of the gloss switches at the parts warehouse in Ontario, California, and 138 switches in Germany. This indicates to me this switch has been discontinued. I went through this a few years ago when Porsche discontinued the steering cloumn switch assembly we used for the 1997-2001 OBC retrofits in gloss finish, as Porsche replace it with the matte finish assembly. Once the existing inventory of the gloss finish was gone we had to start using the matte finish assembly.

I think because the switch is no longer in PET Sunset cannot determine the finish and/or the years (1997-2000) that had the gloss finish, but it can be ordered because it still exists in inventory at the warehouse.

I have read the pelican parts OBC hack and had a question. Does the use of one switch control both the up mode and down mode? Will the one switch also activate the speed gong. Does anyone know if gloss switches are still available?

Yes, I still show the gloss switch as available (but pricey).

If you have a matt switch all you have to do is put several thin coats of clear gloss spray. You really can't tell the difference.

Also, the gong will not work unless you have the fourth stalk and the control mode only cycles one way with the push button hack.
