Oil Through Exhaust Headers

Recommended Posts

I have a 1999 Boxster 2500cc and I every time I start the engine a lot of white smoke comes out from the excausts for approximately 5 min.I made a search in forums and many people says that if I change the oil separator it will be ok.I went to a car engineer and we notice that there is oil leaking in the left excaust headers.I will put some pictures below.I ve already order the AOS but the engineer believes that this will not correct my problem.I asked him what do you think is the problem then? And he told me that he dont know what the problem is,maybe I need new engine.

There arent many Porsche here in Cyprus so engineers dont know exactly how to fix them.

Can you help me please? Can you advise me what i shall do?

Thanks.

not sure that would be the oil separator. I have seen the results of one letting go and that is not what it looks like. When was you last oil change? What does your oil level read first thing in the morning with all the oil drained into the sump?

I have change the oil 2 weeks ago and it looks ok every morning.I have some oil leaking but this is come from the oil separator tube(photo below). But the oil at the escaust headers is really strange.Engine is working properly.Temperature is ok.I really dont know what problem is :(

If the leak is a head gasket then they can replace the head gasket - without removing the engine.

If there is coolant in the oil then problem is much larger - in that case an exchange engine would likely be less expensive.

They really need to determine where the leak is coming from.

I know its difficult to find a solution from the photos but I need a solution urgent. Here engineers dont know much about Porsche cars.Someone told me that the engine got broken cylinders and I need new engine because Boxster engines cannot be repaired. And he didnt see the car.I dont know who I must trust!

Thats why I am asking to the forum. If the AOS doesnot fix the problem what would be my next move?To change the head gasket? How much this will cost?Is it easy for someone to change this?

It runs really smooth.Temperature is always ok.The car is ok and on highways and on traffic.Just white smoke when i start it.I have bought the car from England a month ago.Previous owner says that everything was ok.No white smoke, nothing. When I get the car the engine was not working ok because the car was sitting for one month,at the port and on the ship, until it came to Cyprus.I full it up with fuel and then it was ok.After few days white smoke appears :(

I would drain the oil and look for coolant in the oil. If there is none then you still need to find the source of your leak. You are going to need find someone that can at least do that. For all you know someone spilled oil on the engine and it is slowly dripping down.

I had one that smoked like mad and actually dripped oil out of the tail pipe, replaced the seperator and it took about 20 km's of driving to stop smoking and several months later and all is well.

You had smoke every time you start the car?Or during driving? You have similar oil leaking in the exhaust headers just like pictures above?

By the way i checked the oil and is ok.No coolant. The only problem is white smoke at startup for some minutes and then is ok

Your SURE the smoke is pure white? Not with a slight blueish tint? Does the smoke have a sweet smell to it?

Its white smoke and last for about 5 minutes and i think its not sweet smell.I think its oil.And as I mention temperature of car is ok and engine works really smooth and fine.Just the white smoke every time i start the engine

Ok....maybe I need to learn something new here. I'll pose this question for any of the Porsche techs out there......

USUALLY white smoke is water, and oil smoke is a blueish white. Is the synthetic oil different?

My smoke was white and lots of it, it would last for about 5 minutes or so then clear up. When it got worse the smoke cloud would enveloped the whole car and the engine started making a squeal noise like a slipping belt when hot.... we removed the oil fill cap, the squeal stopped but the smoke become worse. Replaced the seperator and the problem was cured.

The smoke was definetly white but smelled like oil.

Hi my friend Michael from Athens Greece

Porsche Boxster when is started cold in the morning has some visual and smell effects

the first 5 minutes need to be in working temperature

1 smell a lot of casolline wich do not fired completly

2 some white smoke is visual at the exhaust

after 5 minutes the smoke will be completly clear

in any engine when the car is working temperature 80-90 celsious when white smoke is visual it is clear that the car is burning oil

in any repair shop the can prove it by checking gas exhaust dirts and of cours Lamda sensor

if your engine burning oil the damage is very complicated and need to open it for repairing with new O rings ,pistons , to avoid oil burning

for my opinion your car need "rectified" new piston rings the car is burning oil

check your Lamda sensor and exhaust dirts CO2 the electronic equipment (you know that sensor they put from the computer to the exhaust) will say clear if oil is burning.

if you dont like to repair very closely you can put not so thin oil to pass some months without repair but someday it is clear it need rectified

good luck
