996 Newbie

Hi Y everyone,

I am a newbie to Porsche, but an automotive veterin. Just purchased a 2002 C4 Cabriolet. First thing I noticed is that the red dash indicator showing the emergency brake was on didn't light nup. Turn key to check position, no light either. I figured it was a burned out or loose bulb. Thanks to this forum, I learned the specifics on pulling the cluster.

Instead of bulbs, there are micro LEDs soldered to the circuit board for every indicator except the location for my park brake has NO led. Is this common, or did the factory screw up this circuit board and what options might I have. I contacted the only dealer in my state and he said replace the cluster. For an LED, he must be kidding.

Brickman, before doing all of that, there is a notoriously faulty switch on the handbrake that goes bad. I had mine replaced for the new model. It may not be the light but the switch. Does your top operate?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the top operates and the top indicator operates as well. Must I pull the console to check the switch? In addition, the Check Display will indicate that the brake is on AFTER you are moving with a mellow chime, but it is easy to miss. I would expect the red BRAKE dot to light if the brake was on. Am I correct in my assumption?
