Removing and Installing Rear Lid Support Struts


Note: Part numbers sometimes change without notice. Always double check with your supplier that you have the latest part numbers. Parts Needed: 955.512.550.03 Rear Lid Dampers (2 required) Removal Notes: - To remove the pneumatic springs, they must be in idle state: rear lid open. - The rear lid must be secured against accidental closure after removing the pneumatic springs. - Pneumatic springs must not be opened using force extreme internal pressure. Note: Some of the interior lining piece

Porsche has changed the read lid dampers 3 times now - so hopefully the newest ones last longer.

955.512.550.03 gas pressure spring -- US MSRP $66.01 each

I would think one hour less labor.

FYI, My dealer just changed mine, seems a newer part number has come out: 955.512.550.04

(and 955-512-528-00 for the rear window damper)

This part number is for the Gen 2 (MY2007-) Cayenne's - Gen 1 (MY2003-2006) still use the .03 number (according to PET).

Will the Gen2 part numbers work in the Gen1 Cayenne??

That is the part number on the paperwork from my P-Dealer who replaced the parts, and mine is a 2006, may have to dig deeper... to find out whats going on.

Just did mine on the 2004 S. Partnumber I got from Porsche of North Houston was 955 512 550 06. While I had all the trim pieces out I gave them a good cleaning. What a difference! The hatch opens so much better and the clean trim make it all look showroom new!

I think any sticky silicone type goo (Permatex?) should work just fine. As long as you have a good seal to prevent water from leaking in.

Anyone successful with this tutorial? I am in the middle of it right now. Not sure why the rear grab rails (backseat passenger) need to be removed. Seems like in addition to the rear headliner piece, you also need to remove the c pillar trim and unclip part of the main headliner in order to have full access to the bonded cover and the struts behind it. Any precautions to take with respect to the airbag? Or unclipping the main headliner? Can't really see where it is clipped.

Instructions are pretty good for this one - I replaced mine today. I didn't remove the grab rails from the rear - the headliner has enough room with the D-pillars removed to access the covers and the far end connecting point for the struts.
