First thing I did on my car - actually second, after the clear turn signals....

Left over parts

I love it, it gives me just the extra wiggle room that I wanted...

Has anybody seen the instructions to do this on a 987?

I want to get at the small compartment in the center console so I can mount a switch but I can't figure how to get the trim off around the shifter and the pieces that wrap around the lower portion of the center console at the bottom?

Thanks!

I have a targa... is there enough extra wire to the top switches to relocate them?

Relocating them where ? Around the A/C area or on the tunnel area ? In my experience, I did not have enough wire to reach the tunnel dummy switches... Easy to splice but I was lazy and went the other direction instead.

I don't know in your case as I don't have a Targa, or your targa specifically (with what options)... But if the switch looks like it'll fit in one of the dummy switch on around the AC/radio area, most likely yes... If that area is full of active buttons and you have no dummy switches left to remove, or the targo button is huge, then probably not ;-)

The trim at the lower (both sides) of the center console are located with push in clips and can

be prised off easily (no screws)

To remove the gear shifter trim see here

Thanks for the reply, I see that the pictures are from a 986, and I thought that it would be the same for a 987, BUT when I tried to pull up just like is shown in the pictures I gave up just before I thought I had reached the breaking pressure to snap off something!

I also tried pulling on the trim that runs along each side of the center console at the front and met with the same results, it wouldn't let go?!

I figure there is a method to all of this and when done coreectly they may just 'pop-off', but I don't really want to head down to the dealer to buy someting that I broke by pulling in the wrong place...

This is when an exploded drawing would be invaluable!

  • 5 months later...

thanks for the post this was very helpful, I just did the center console delete tonight.

it took a bit longer than I thought but relocating the heated seat buttons was what got me on this one.

So while I had everything apart I relocated the microphone for my BT kit and relocated the ipod wires to the glove box underneath the center console.

The look is now very clean.

Well, this wasn't so much a thread on the aesthetics, but on how to do it and how it looks when done.

If you don't like it, nobody's making you do it ;-) Personally, I like the look because I've has porsches from the 356->911-993-996 and until the 996, all of them had that straight dash look with no console. It's kind of a 911 trademark look... I'm used to it that way.

And I did it because I was too confined with the console, leg room wise, especially since the steering wheel has no tilt adjustment (to move higher) and the seat very little lowering adjustment, so the wheel was in the way on my legs... I would not do it on a 987/997 since those have adjustment at the wheel...

I have long legs too, for me just moving the seat back works for me. You're right I will not do it. So relax! I only stated my opinion and how I think it presents itself! One of the nice things about a forum is it allows folks to express ideas and opinions. So even though the thread started as a how too, there is nothing stating that expanding to the asthetics can't be expressed!

I don't think how many models one had, has anything to do with it. My opinion was only expressed for the 996 and 997.
