In the course of a wheel alignment, in an effort to get the steering wheel to be centered when the car is going straight down the road, a not-so-swift tech re-positioned the wheel on the steering column off of factory center, rather than adjusting the tie rods to solve this problem.

The result is that the steering rack is not on dead center when the car is going straight; and since the steering gearing is variable, the car turns-in differently to the left than to the right; most annoying.

I need to know how to find the center of the steering rack. Once this is known, the steering wheel can be re-centered, and the tie-rods adjusted accordingly, by my local wheel alignment guy, not the one who screwed up the car!

Does anyone know, definitively, how to determine when the steering rack is on dead center?

The service manual says:

"After working on wheel suspension parts, when replacing the steering−angle sensor and after

changing the wheel alignment values, calibrate the steering angle sensor with the front wheels

in straight−ahead position using the PIWIS tester"

Take it to your Porsche dealer. They ought to be able to calibrate the angle sensor and address your problem.
