996 C4 : flashing led's P and 4 then D and 4

Hi. I am a newbie here... hope I have done this properly.

I have a 2000 C4 996 Cabriolet.

Over the last 6 weeks it has gone from

Occassionally sticking with flashing P and 4th LED then D and 4th, generally turn on/off fixed it

It got progressively worse, happening more and more frequently.

Then it did it all the time. All gears working properly, both in MANUAL and AUTO.. just annoying flashing LED's and never being sure if you'd changed down to 1 or 2 etc.... but not a massive problem.

THEN - NOW

Still flashing between P and 4 / N and 4 / R and 4 / D and 4

BUT no MANUAL.. it seems to just work in AUTO between gears 2,3 and 4.. no 1st or 5th.

Took it to AUTOSTRASSE they thought it was just an iffy cable connection.. WD40 etc

No difference

Porsche computer showed, I think, fault 30.

AUTOSTRASSE think it might need new selector controller £1.3K.... I am sure it might be something more basic / electro mechanical... stretched selector cable??

ANY IDEAS PLEASE ??

What is the mileage and when was the las time the transmission fluid and filter where changed? I would start there. I can not find a DTC 30 in my manual, but 31, 32, 33 are all related to pressure regulators. They are about $200 each if they go bad. But I would start with fluid first.

Along with Izzy's suggestion - make sure that there are not more fault codes. Find a shop with a PST2 or PIWIS tester and have them read the codes (you should write all of them down). Then have them run the PST2 Tiptronic tests on your car.

A DTC 30 is engine compartment temperature - which would have nothing to do wit the transmission.
