Start Up and Idle Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've been digging around for an answer to my idle & CEL issue and have found several topics, but none match exactly what I'm seeing.

The CEL came on about 6mos ago with p1123 and p1125. I was able to resolve it by cleaning the MAF with a circuit board cleaner as suggested by a posting here. I did not notice anything wrong with idle or acceleration at that time.

It's now come on again. I've noticed difficulty at start up. The throttle response is poor right after start up. I have to play the gas just to get the RPM's up. In addition, once warm, if I step on the gas hard the car bogs down. If I gently run up the speed there is no problem with acceleration, but I can't punch it.

I tried the cleaning and the CEL came back on the next running with the same issues.

I found a posting that suggested unplugging the MAF to see if that was the problem. I can now hit the gas after the engine is warm and the car really moves again, but it didn't solve the throttle response at start up. I would say it's almost worse.

Does any of this help point to the MAF failing, or something else?

Thanks,

Sounds like two problems to me.

One is that if the car runs better (other than idle) with the MAF disconnected then you likely need a new MAF.

The idle condition on your MY99 C2 could be caused by carbon buildup on the throttle butterfly and the Idle Control Valve (ICV).

Clean both with some carb/fuel injector cleaner. Make sure the ICV moves freely - if not it will need to be replaced too.

It just means that your MAF is beyond cleaning, i experienced the same exact symptoms as you when my MAF took a dive. Just buy a new one and fall in love with your boxster all over again.
