Turn Signals Not Working on '72 911

After 1.5 years I'm just getting my car back on the road (was living out of country). It was working fine when I put it away. A new mechanic (who usually works on air cooled old VWs) is getting a few minor things done to get it back on the road, including oil change, etc. I also asked him to look at the turn signals as they are not working. He's reported that the 4-way signal works when the key is turned to run position (but not to the point where it turns over the engine), but he said the turn signals are not. The turn signal switch was replaced with new unit about 4 years ago and the car has hardly been used since then. I'd like to avoid having the mechanic spend a lot of costly time trying to trace down a fault if this is a simple problem or if the turn signal devise is known to go often and if that is all that needs to be done in replace that again. If it is a known problem, can anything be done to avoid this switch going? Any input on this much appreciated.

I would start looking for poor/corroded ground connections. They are fairly common in those cars as they age.

Mechanic called me.. Was just the fuses. looks like he started with the hard stuff first, assuming it was something bigger.
