I have a 2000 2.7 with about 43,000 miles I posted about a year ago with this problem still no fix. On the first start up of the day (only with cold engine) after about 5 sec. the engine acts like it is about to die. Sometimes car shakes sometimes it just drops to about 700rpms and idles a little rough for about 4 secs. I tried first cleaning throttle body, but did not fix it. Just tried cleaning the MAF even though it did not appear dirty, but did still not fix it. I don't know if this is related but on the first start up the car smells as if it is running rich like a strong fuel burning smell in garage and outside. I'm sure this isn't a major problem but is very annoying, so any more suggestions might help me thanx. :)

You need an OBD II tool that can read the cars mixtures and air flow (TRA, FRA, MAF air flow).

Without these diagnostics you are shooting in the dark.

this could be many things.

if you know someone with a Boxster, swap MAFs, reset the DME/ECU by removing the neg battery cable for a few minutes (have radio code if your radio needs one) then re-attach neg battery cable and start the car. if it runs normally, it's probably the MAF.

but as Loren suggested, you really need a code reader/PST2 that can read the multiple variables that will help you nail down the problem.

This may not be what you're experiencing exactly. My 2001 Boxster 2.7L had a somewhat erratic idle. It would run fine at idle for a few seconds, then drop to around 700 for a few seconds, then back to normal again. Sometimes this was just after starting it up, sometimes after driving it for a while, and sometimes it wouldn't happen at all. Anyway, I ran some Seafoam cleaner into the air intake through one of the vacuum lines (and followed the rest of the instructions on the package), thinking maybe an air control switch was sticking. Whether or not it was that, it fixed it and I haven't had the problem since then. That was about a year ago.

You might want to do a little research before adding Seafoam. I think it's great stuff, but I've heard it's not approved by Porsche. Also, it'll produce quite a smoke screen when you first start it up after letting it soak for its 5 or 10 minutes.
