Buying a Used Boxter $25-35k, what model?

Can I get a little help from the Boxster Gurus here?

I'm ready to buy a used boxster. $25-35k range to spend. Looking for the best bang for the buck. 2002S-04S or a newer 04-05 base model? Should I be buying low mileage no matter what the year or buy a later model? Any year models to avoid for problems? I have read quite a bit and seems the post 02 models are all pretty solid.

Am I smarter to buy an older base model and look for a turbo kit? I'm not sure what is out there for aftermarket performance upgrades.

Trying to figure out the sweet spot in that price range.

Knowing what you know now, what boxster would you buy if you had 25-35k to spend and you were looking for the best deal?

And I'd buy a well documented 01 S with at least 30k miles and do a PPI on it and a Carmax.

It would be an easy decision for me. 05 987 for sure.

Conventional wisdom says get the newest model you can afford.

In fact, 987 is much better car in my experience. In & out. Nearly everything.

But some people prefer 986 because of side air vent :rolleyes: , so to each own.

(Don't get me wrong. I'd take 986 over any other roaster in the same price range.)

If you want to go by 986, get 03 model at least.

Window vs Plastic is huge, and other performance & cosmetic upgrades too.

In the DC area, you can certainly get a 2003 Boxster S with ~30k miles for <$35k. If you live in MN, you should definitely get a 2003+. You won't have to worry about opening the top when it's <60F.

Don't worry about an older car + turbo. Porsche aftermarket parts are notoriously expensive. (and it will render the car unsalable)

Not necessarily. It really depends on the gearing required for each track/AX.

I see that there arent many upgrade options. What do the turnkey 3.4 or 3.6 swaps cost? I gotta give my brother a run for his money in his 04 vette :)

I've driven all kinds of cars and the Boxster sure delivers value and driving experience for the money. I am looking at 03S 04S and 05base cars now.

If you want to outrun your brother all you need is a Boxter S, really good tires, a little driving skill, and meet him at a nice tight Auto-X course. If you want to outrun him in a drag race you will need a GT3, 911TT, or a Dodge Viper. Most Porsches were never designed to go fast in a straight line drag race. The Boxter is a champion at cornering.
