Anyone else hear a metallic rattle when driving their 996? This is my first Porsche (2001 C4) and it runs gr8, just has that metallic rattling from somewhere on the driver's side when accelerating. I removed the rear bumper and checked all of the heat shields and nothing appears to be loose. Any ideas party people??? Much appreciated! :lightbulb:

Could be your compressor for the air con making noise... i.e. duff bearing...

Could be a baffle in the muffler.

sounds like the same noise that i have. comes from the passenger (right) side though!

Thanks friends! I punched the mufflers a few times with no noise and I tightened every bolt I could find with regards to mufflers. I am taking it in for the 30K service so I hope they can find it at the Porsche dealer. It does not sound like a heat shield since this is a sharp metallic rattle sound (heatshields would be more of a dull rattle) and still could be a baffle...this is very baffling!!! I made a funny! Anyways I will let you know what the dealership finds out for those of you that may have a similar issue!

I would bet it is the cat converter welds are loose based on your description. I had the same exact issue and that is what it was. Dealer will replace under warranty, they have replaced a few this year since track season openned.

This is how I found out, use a rubber mallet and tap each part, muffler, cat converter, etc until you track it down. If when you tap the cat it sounds like loose marbles in there, you found the issue.

I have a similar rattle that comes from the driver's side, only on start up. The rattle sounds like a heat shield but goes away once the car has been running for 15 seconds or so. I checked everything that can be tightened, but it still remains.
